THE CITY OF PORT HURON IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:
CONTROLLER
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To supervise and administer the accounting system of the City; to supervise and maintain a system of accounts as required by law; to prepare financial records and reports; and to perform related accounting and administrative work including the duties of Purchasing Agent.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the direction of the Director of Finance.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision is exercised over the employees of the Accounting and Control Division.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform).
- Supervise and provide for a uniform chart of accounts in accordance with State law.
- Supervise all accounting functions of the City.
- Summarize and balance records of accounting, make entries and post to accounts and ledgers.
- Supervise the purchasing functions of the City and carry out the duties of Purchasing Agent.
- Prepare periodic financial statements and reports, including various grant related reporting activities.
- Supervise and train personnel.
- Assist in budget administration and reporting.
- Supervise cash flow administration.
- Prepare correspondence, records, and reports.
- Prepare related work as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:
- Considerable knowledge of modern financial accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
- Considerable knowledge in general business, accounting and statistical procedures.
- Considerable knowledge of governmental accounting activities and of the structure of the organization and functions of municipal government.
- Experience using the B S & A software package.
- Ability to prepare complex financial records and reports.
- Extensive knowledge of computer functions and operations and an in-depth ability to program and maintain spreadsheets.
- Ability to organize and supervise the work of others.
- Good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness.
- Ability to work effectively with other officials, employees, and the general public.
An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following training and experience:
- Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university with a degree in Accounting, Business, Public Administration or a related field preferred.
- Several years’ experience performing responsible accounting, auditing, and related administrative work.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in an administrative/supervisory position preferred.
- Municipal accounting experience preferred.
- Experience as a Certified Public Accountant preferred.
Working Hours: Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000 annually
