Job Function:
Under direct supervision, this position performs skilled firefighting and emergency medical tasks in the protection of life and property. Firefighters are responsible for responding to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, and other emergency incidents to suppress fires, rescue victims, and provide pre-hospital emergency medical care. Work involves considerable physical exertion, risk to personal safety, and requires thorough training and teamwork. Firefighters also participate in station and equipment maintenance (painting, carpentry, mowing and weed eating), fire prevention, training, and public education programs. An employee in this classification performs the duties of other employees in the Pleasanton Fire Department when so assigned. A large portion of the time spent in routine house duties including the cleaning and care of equipment, quarters, fire apparatus and in the study of firefighting techniques. This position exercises no supervision.
Essential Job Functions:
- Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls including medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous material incidents, and vehicle accidents.
- Performs fire suppression duties including operating hoses, nozzles, ladders (deploying and climbing), and other firefighting equipment; enters burning buildings to remove persons and combat fires.
- Responds to render assistance in emergencies
- Provides emergency medical care within the scope of EMT-B certification and assists with patient assessment, treatment, and transport.
- Conducts search and rescue operations and supports technical rescue operations when needed.
- Participates in daily apparatus and equipment checks; ensures tools and vehicles are clean, functional, and properly stored.
- Keeps fire stations, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
- Performs routine housekeeping and maintenance of fire stations, equipment, and grounds.
- Participates in regular training and drills to maintain knowledge, skills, and physical readiness.
- Assists in fire prevention inspections and activities; conducts pre-fire planning and hydrant inspections.
- Provides fire safety education and public information presentations to community groups, schools, and citizens.
- Operates emergency vehicles and apparatus in a safe and responsible manner.
- Maintains familiarity with streets, buildings, and other features in the service area to improve emergency response efficiency.
- Completes required documentation such as run reports, equipment logs, and daily checklists.
- Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions.
- Follows City Safety Policy and Practices and adheres to the responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the city handbook.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
