Typical Duties
- Maintains streets by removing or repairing damaged sections of concrete or asphalt, preparing sections for resurfacing, applying surfacing materials, leveling and rolling to ensure proper compaction and grade.
- Maintains curbs, gutters, and sidewalks by removing damaged sections, forming structure, pouring and finishing concrete.
- Fabricates and installs or removes street and traffic signs.
- Lays out stencils and lines out or paints such items as legends, curbs, crosswalks, control lanes, and dividing lines for traffic control purposes.
- Installs raised pavement markers by mixing epoxy and laying out the design on the street.
- Controls traffic and promotes safety for workers and the public at job sites by serving as flag person or setting out cones or warning signs.
- Picks up leaves and other street debris using hand tools or leaf loader to ensure unobstructed gutters and drains and to promote cleanliness.
- Performs routine minor maintenance by checking and adjusting air pressure, oil, and other fluids on vehicles, equipment, and tools used on the job. Identifies and corrects minor mechanical or electrical problems.
- Cleans up spills, trash, and accident debris from streets.
- Safely operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, roller, and trucks with trailers, and full loads, including backing and dumping.
- Attends and/or instructs at periodic safety meetings to share and learn safety information and procedures.
- May be required to respond to emergency call outs after hours and on weekends.
- Performs other maintenance and operations duties in the department as necessary.

- Basic concrete procedures, including removal to subgrade, mixing ratios, forming, placing of concrete and finishing techniques.
- Basic asphalt procedures, including removal, surface preparation, mixing ratios, spreading, and compacting.
- Basic painting procedures, including airless painting, mixing of paints, clean-up, and use of thinners.
- Common safety procedures, including safe lifting techniques.
- Read and understand materials such as safety manuals, maintenance manuals, and operating instructions for tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Read and use maps and simple schematic diagrams.
- Write legibly to fill out timecards and to complete simple reports and forms such as maintenance reports and vehicle inspection forms.
- Add and subtract to complete timecards, and to measure.
- Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment, including basic troubleshooting to identify and correct minor mechanical and electrical problems.
- Appropriately select and safely use power tools such as jackhammer, chain saw, disc trencher, and hand tools such as shovel and rake.
- Safely and properly operate heavy equipment such as backhoe or roller, and drive trucks with trailers, including backing and dumping.
