In this role, you will assist in the upkeep and repair of city streets by performing tasks such as patching potholes, sealing cracks, clearing debris, and maintaining storm drains. Typical Duties

Maintains streets by removing or repairing damaged sections of concrete or asphalt, preparing sections for resurfacing, applying surfacing materials, leveling and rolling to ensure proper compaction and grade.
Maintains curbs, gutters, and sidewalks by removing damaged sections, forming structure, pouring and finishing concrete.
Fabricates and installs or removes street and traffic signs.
Lays out stencils and lines out or paints such items as legends, curbs, crosswalks, control lanes, and dividing lines for traffic control purposes.
Installs raised pavement markers by mixing epoxy and laying out the design on the street.
Controls traffic and promotes safety for workers and the public at job sites by serving as flag person or setting out cones or warning signs.
Picks up leaves and other street debris using hand tools or leaf loader to ensure unobstructed gutters and drains and to promote cleanliness.
Performs routine minor maintenance by checking and adjusting air pressure, oil, and other fluids on vehicles, equipment, and tools used on the job. Identifies and corrects minor mechanical or electrical problems.
Cleans up spills, trash, and accident debris from streets.
Safely operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, roller, and trucks with trailers, and full loads, including backing and dumping.
Attends and/or instructs at periodic safety meetings to share and learn safety information and procedures.
May be required to respond to emergency call outs after hours and on weekends.
Performs other maintenance and operations duties in the department as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities.
A typical qualifying background would be graduation from high school, or GED equivalent and one year of experience performing relevant duties.

LICENSE
Possess Class C California driver's license upon hire.

Prior to completion of the probationary period, must obtain a Class A California driver's license.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Work outside daily in a variety of weather conditions and among dusts and pollens.
Regularly work near moving traffic and its exhaust fumes and among paint, epoxy, asphalt, and smoke fumes.
Wear a uniform and safety gear furnished by the City. City provide an allowance for steel-toes safety boots and launders uniform weekly.
Climb and work from ladders up to 10 feet high in order to install street and traffic signs.

Knowledge of:

Basic concrete procedures, including removal to subgrade, mixing ratios, forming, placing of concrete and finishing techniques.
Basic asphalt procedures, including removal, surface preparation, mixing ratios, spreading, and compacting.
Basic painting procedures, including airless painting, mixing of paints, clean-up, and use of thinners.
Common safety procedures, including safe lifting techniques.

Skill to:

Read and understand materials such as safety manuals, maintenance manuals, and operating instructions for tools, machinery, and equipment.
Read and use maps and simple schematic diagrams.
Write legibly to fill out timecards and to complete simple reports and forms such as maintenance reports and vehicle inspection forms.
Add and subtract to complete timecards, and to measure.
Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment, including basic troubleshooting to identify and correct minor mechanical and electrical problems.
Appropriately select and safely use power tools such as jackhammer, chain saw, disc trencher, and hand tools such as shovel and rake.
Safely and properly operate heavy equipment such as backhoe or roller, and drive trucks with trailers, including backing and dumping.
Communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers, and the public.
Independently lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 95 pounds on a daily basis.
See well enough to read a variety of street signs and to distinguish among color-coded wires and marks; depth perception sufficient to smooth asphalt levelly.
Perform physical labor throughout the workday, involving frequent walking, lifting, bending, and stooping.
Hear and speak clearly and loudly enough to communicate with co-workers over traffic and machinery noise and to use a two-way radio.
Follow written and oral instructions.
Use computer for work activity.
Learn the duties of the position and accept increasing job responsibilities.
Stand for up to two hours at a time and for up to six hours a day to serve as a flag person.
Work effectively and harmoniously as part of a crew.
Remain attentive to details of job duties and conscious of potential hazards.
