What are the responsibilities and job description for the LIBRARIAN I - YOUTH SERVICES position at City of Plantation?

This is a non-exempt position which requires professional and supervisory work in connection with the operation of various activities and services of the City of Plantation Library and the Library Department, which includes performing services and duties of a responsible nature in the areas of library reference and circulation, children’s service, and technical service. The Youth Services Librarian develops, coordinates, and administers library services for children, parents, and other adults who work with children under the supervision of the Library Director.

Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Must be willing to work Saturdays and evenings.

Supervises and assists in the accurate cataloging and classifying of books and library materials and retains responsibility for collection development for the children’s collection.

Oversees the flow of technical processing of children’s library materials, which includes the assembling of orders for the Senior Librarian and the preparation of items

for circulation.

Manages daily operation of the library through both the supervision of subordinate library personnel and overseeing the activities of library patrons. Enforces library rules as needed.

Assists in managing and maintaining a current children’s Library inventory and selection and assists with routinely updating said collection as needed.

Researches reference information and gathers relevant materials for juvenile library patrons.

Assists patrons at the children’s circulation desk, and adult circulation desk as needed, with selection and borrowing of books and materials.

Assists patrons with questions, research needs, and information literacy, both in person and online.

Provides general assistance to library patrons, including reader's advisories and recommending authors, materials, and resources.

Serves as library liaison to various local schools and community organizations.

Plans and assists with the development and implementation of programming and outreach for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school age children, and their families and caregivers.

Prepares and merchandises displays and interactive passive programs in the children’s area of the library.

Attends relevant library professional meetings and stays abreast of new developments and trends in the profession.

Participates in various evaluation committees for the selection of library vendors as assigned.

Participating in selecting, weeding, and maintaining library materials.

Participating in outreach events and promoting library services.

Supports the Library Director with various relevant tasks as needed in order to ensure the success of daily Library operations.

Performs related work as required and as directed.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of standard library practices and procedures, the library collection, and relevant community resources.

Knowledge of current juvenile literary and library trends and of the types of books in demand from library patrons and the general public.

Experience working with children, parents, caregivers, and educators.

Strong skills in early literacy.

Knowledge of proper telephone etiquette and procedures.

Knowledge of the mechanics of the Dewey Decimal System.

Knowledge of clerical routine and operation of standard office equipment and library equipment.

Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.

Skill in written and verbal communication.

Skill in organizational techniques for the proper maintenance of library files.

Skill in computer literacy and computer resources as they pertain to library science.

Skill in providing excellent and comprehensive customer service.

Ability to oversee and supervise subordinate library personnel.

Ability to work the circulation desk in checking out and processing returned books and other library material.

Ability to handle confidential records and maintain confidentiality.

Ability to perform routine library clerical duties such as file books on shelves, file catalog cards, type registration cards, mend books, etc.

Ability to develop and present to the public relevant library services information.

Ability to make recommendations for purchase of juvenile materials as determined by the needs of the public and library patrons.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with supervisors, other library personnel, and library patrons.

Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent but Master’s Degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program preferred; supplemented by a minimum of 2 years of experience as a youth services librarian in a public or school library; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses And Certifications

Valid State of Florida driver’s license.

Work is performed in a library environment directly with the public.

Physical Demands Might Include

The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Work requires the ability to climb ladders, crouch, balance, reach objects at various heights, and lift and/or carry and push/pull various objects.
