Job Description
Operates proficiently any equipment within the Parks system. Performs advanced and skilled maintenance to facilities, grounds and equipment within the Parks system. Will assist parks staff in the maintenance, inspection and completion of projects and repairs. Occasionally will be the lead person on smaller projects.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advanced maintenance of grounds and facilities within the Parks system
- Daily grounds keeping with the Parks system
- Assists with forestry and irrigation maintenance
- Advanced lawn/landscape care including chemical application including knowledge of safe use and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information
- Perform maintenance at Mt. Olive Cemetery as needed
Primary operator for wide area mower during mowing season
Qualifications
- Knowledge of basic forestry practices, advanced general construction trades, and operation of any equipment within the Parks system
- Skilled at the safe operation of hand and power tools
- Ability to make sound decisions about equipment operation and maintenance based on fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems.
- Ability to manage one’s own emotions and responses. Work and communicate cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Ability to establish priorities for own workload; work independently with limited supervision.
- Compliance with City policies, procedures, ordinances, and OSHA safety standards; practical application of ergonomic practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ability to make public presentations.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
Requirements
- High School or GED required.
- Two-year vocational degree or certificate preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License. Minimum of Class B CDL earned within 12 months of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The Heavy Equipment Operator’s physical job demands include occasional maximum lift of 80 lbs from floor to knuckle; occasional maximum horizontal lift of 50 lbs floor to shoulder; frequent maximum lift of 13 lbs floor to waist; frequent maximum carry of 68 lbs 25 feet; occasional maximum push/pull force of 80 lbs; frequent horizontal push/pull force of 20 lbs; frequent vertical push force of 20 lbs; frequent maximum grip force 35 lbs; continuous maximum grip force 10 lbs; occasional climb up to 29” height; frequent forward reach; occasional overhead reach; frequent bend; frequent bend/crouch; occasional crouch/kneel/crawl; frequent neck rotation; frequent trunk rotation; frequent balance; frequent sitting; continuous standing and continuous walking.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Some adverse conditions exist with this position. Some exposure to heavy equipment, noise, hazardous chemicals and all types of weather conditions. This position performs various tasks which are seasonal. The worker walks on uneven terrain and surfaces that may be slick from rain, ice and/or oil.
