Job Summary
Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, maintains the overall cleanliness and appearance of assigned Parks, Recreation & Tourism facilities, grounds, open spaces, parking lots, downtown/uptown, and recreation areas. Empties, removes, and replaces trash can liners, cleans trash and recycling receptacles as well as disposes of litter and general debris within assigned areas as necessary. Operates and maintains in working order small equipment, such as a backpack blower, pressure washing equipment, trash grabbers, pickup truck, hydraulic dump beds, lift trailers, compacting trucks, and utility vehicle (UTV) in performance of job duties. Proactively identifies, removes, and/or reports potential safety hazards, debris, and graffiti. May be assigned to work during inclement weather conditions (e.g., snow/ice, heavy rain/flooding, etc.) to clear and maintain roads, walkways and assist in limb/tree removal. Assists with event setup, cleanup, installations, etc. as needed. Subject to on-call availability.

- Maintain Cleanliness of Grounds & Facilities: Remove and dispose of litter, debris, and trash from assigned Parks, Recreation and Tourism facilities, grounds, open spaces, parking lots, downtown/uptown, and recreation areas. Utilize assigned garbage truck (non-CDL) and hydraulic lift gate pickup truck to collect and empty trash. Clean trash and recycling receptables. Remove leaves, small limbs, graffiti, and general debris as necessary. Perform routine, light grounds work, weed removal and water plants as needed. Sweep and/or blow off sidewalks, high traffic areas, shelters, play areas, etc. Proactively identify, remove, and/or report potential safety hazards. Remove hazardous items such as dead animals, bees, ants, snakes, needles, and transient materials, as well as invasive and noxious plants as directed.
- Support Inclement Weather Operations: Work outside of regular schedule to provide assistance to internal and external stakeholders throughout inclement weather conditions (e.g., snow/ice, heavy rain/flooding, etc.). Clear and maintain roads, walkways, and assist in limb/tree removal. Apply ice, sand, and snow melt seasonally throughout high traffic areas as assigned.
- Provide Event & General Maintenance Support: Assist with the set-up, tear down, and cleanup of permitted special events and programs. Assist with various City related projects, including the construction, installation, and tearing down of temporary structures, banners, and decorations. Assist in moving/relocating furniture, supplies, and/or equipment. Assist with painting projects as needed. Post signage when needed to communicate facility closures, notifications, etc. Maintain in working order and service small equipment such as a backpack blower, pressure washing equipment, trash grabbers, pickup truck, hydraulic dump beds, lift trailers, compacting trucks, and UTV’s. Fuel and clean equipment as needed, ensure batteries are charged, wash and/or grease parts, check and change oil and air filters as needed. Create, edit, enter, and maintain electronic work order system, emails, online inventory systems and other related technologies required for the department or division to properly manage assets, workflow, labor, and materials.

Qualifications
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- This is an entry level position for which training will be provided.
- Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.
Knowledge of:
- Basic equipment operating practices/procedures.
- Safe handling of litter, debris, recycling, and solid waste materials.
- Safely and efficiently operate a garbage truck (non-CDL) and a hydraulic lift gate pickup truck.
- Read basic communication to understand streets, maps, and points of interest, and duties.
- Perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Write simple sentences to communicate basic information such as shift reports.
- Follow instructions/directives.
- Walk for extended periods to move between work sites.
- Work in inclement weather conditions including cold rain, wind, heat, snow, sleet, etc.
- Appropriately place out safety signage.
- Work safely around traffic obstacles and vehicles.
- Communicate basic information to the public in a respectful and knowledgeable manner.
- Use radios and basic GPS devices.
- Use smart phones, tablets, computers, and compose emails in a clear and professional manner.
