CITY OF PINELLAS PARK, FL Non-Exempt – Grade 310 & 320
Police Officer
Definition: Perform law enforcement work in an effort to provide crime prevention, safety, and public service to the
residents of Pinellas Park.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the
following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a

Tasks:
Patrols the City being watchful of activities going on around the area being patrolled; remains visible as much
as possible to deter criminal activity; conducts traffic stops as necessary to issue citations or check out
suspicious actions; answers calls from dispatchers for citizen assistance, traffic accidents, or other calls;
investigates citizen concerns; checks doors and other means of entry for businesses, processes crime scenes,
maintains crowd control.
Leaves notices with businesses to notify them the police department was protecting their property; investigates
crimes and/or suspected crimes called in by citizens; writes reports of all activity during a shift, all contacts with
people and whether they were suspicious; attends court to testify as called by any one of a number of courts
and/or attorneys.
Attends training as assigned or requested to maintain currency and proficiency in the field and to retain
certification; attends meetings to be brought current on happenings during the previous shift, receive
assignments, inform superiors of actions taken, or receive field support; reads, updates, and maintains the duty
log; attends professional seminars to remain current.

Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, statutes, regulations, rules, policies, and
procedures.
Knowledge of court cases and other legal matters and the impact on the law enforcement community.
Knowledge of the latest advances in law enforcement tools, techniques, and practices.
Knowledge of legal means of restraint.
Knowledge of activities that may be cause for concern.
Skill in analyzing information and drawing valid conclusions.
Skill in interacting with people from every socio-economic category.
Skill in maintaining self-control in emergency situations.
Skill in oral and written communications for administrative and technical purposes.
Physical Requirements: Work involves continuous standing, walking, or driving, with some occasions of sitting or physical
exertion in the pursuit, detainment, and/or arrest of a suspect. The job also requires frequent bending/stooping, grasping,
reaching, and lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 15 pounds, with occasional fine manipulations, pulling/pushing, and
repetitive motion. On rare occasions the work requires climbing, crawling, kneeling, and lifting/carrying objects weighing 15
pounds or more.
Qualifications: Requires a high school diploma or GED and the completion of at least 30 credit hours at an accredited
college or university in related coursework. The 30 credit hour college requirement will be waived if the applicant
possesses two years prior law enforcement experience or two years active military duty. Requires the ability to meet
the minimum standards for employment as a Police Officer established by Florida State Statute and meet background
and personal history standards as established by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. Must
obtain a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Certification. Employees are required to pass the National
Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses identified for their position and listed in the most recent version
of the NIMS Training Guide within one (1) year of placement into this position. Requires a valid Florida driver license.
