Traffic Signal Technician - Street Transportation Department

About This Position

The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department's Traffic Services Division is dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The Traffic Signal Shop plays a critical role in this mission by constructing, remodeling, and maintaining signalized intersections citywide.

The Street Transportation Department is currently seeking skilled and motivated Traffic Signal Technicians to join the team. In this role, you will install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair traffic signal control devices and systems in the field. Assignments are received verbally or through sketches, blueprints, and work orders.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair analog, digital, and microprocessor-based traffic signal equipment to the component level.
• Program and maintain computerized traffic controllers, monitors, and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) equipment.
• Operate and maintain fiber optic and wireless communication systems, message displays, and video/audio components.
• Test and evaluate traffic signal equipment in the field and at the bench.
• Collaborate with Traffic Engineers and the Traffic Management Center to enhance traffic signal operations, including Light Rail Train system integration.
• Maintain accurate records and contribute to continuous improvement efforts in service delivery.
  
  

This position will report to a Traffic Signal Technician Foreman or other supervisor. The Traffic Signal Shop is located at: 2241 E. Jefferson, Phoenix, AZ 85034.

Work Schedule

• Initial training shift (1st year): Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
• Post-training (after 1st year): Rotating 4/10 shifts - subject to shift bid process.
• Shift A: 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Thursday.
• Shift B: 5:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Tuesday through Friday.
• Shift C: 5:30 PM to 4:00 AM, Monday through Thursday.
  

Due to the importance of proper traffic signal operation for vehicles and pedestrians, traffic signal technicians are required to be available for scheduled and unscheduled emergency overtime, off-shift work, holiday, and weekend assignments, as needed.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge Of

• Electrical and electronic repair methods, tools, and safety practices.
• Traffic signal components, including electro-mechanical and computerized systems.
• ITS technologies, including fiber optics, WAN/LAN networks, and wireless communication.
• Microsoft Office and basic computer applications.
• Safety protocols for working in high-traffic areas and with high-voltage systems (up to 220 VAC).
  
  

Ability To

• Troubleshoot complex electrical circuits and systems.
• Operate heavy equipment such as bucket trucks and forklifts.
• Work safely at heights up to 100 feet and distinguish the full color spectrum.
• Set up and remove traffic control devices safely.
• Use hand tools and electrical testing equipment proficiently.
• Work independently with minimal supervision.
• Accurately input and manage data using computer systems.
  
  

SALARY

Pay Range: $30.17 to $44.58 per hour.

Hiring Range: $30.17 to $38.52 per hour.

Additional Compensation For Unit 2 Positions Includes

• Shift differential pay is available for hours worked during nights and weekends.
• Standby is currently compensated at $2.50 per hour.
• Callout requests and responses are paid at one and a half times the normal hourly wage.
• 401(a), 3.62% employer contribution of base wage for Unit 002 employees.

• Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
• Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
• Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.

Minimum Qualifications

• Four years working with traffic signal control devices including the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic control systems.
• Or completion of a traffic signal technician trainee program.
• Experience in programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text and function block diagram.
• A certificate of completion in electronics technology from an accredited institution may substitute for one year of experience.
• An Associates degree in electronics may substitute for 2 years of experience.
• Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
• All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Working Conditions And Requirements

• Requires working with voltages as high as 220 V AC & DC.
• Irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
• Exposure to outdoor elements including extreme heat, cold, dust, and pollution.
• Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and near active traffic.
• Requires working confined spaces and in a vehicle-based aerial lift or bucket truck at heights up to 100 feet.
• Physical demands include lifting 50 lbs., repetitive bending, and prolonged standing or walking on uneven surfaces.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

• Experience with safe operation of aerial lift and bucket trucks.
• Hands-on experience with traffic signal controllers and cabinet systems.
• Familiarity with programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, or function block diagram.
