About This Position

The Planning and Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. It is a city department of over 500 employees across four main Divisions: Management Services, Planning, Historic Preservation, and Development.

Planning and Development has a vacancy for a Sign Inspector in the Planning Division.

Sign Inspectors are responsible for the comprehensive review of sign permit applications, including schematic drawings for commercial, industrial, and residential signage, as well as associated site plans and supporting documentation. The role requires thorough research into each application to determine applicable zoning provisions and sign regulations, followed by the precise application of those standards in evaluating compliance. Specific duties are assigned according to whether the position is designated as an in office or field based role.

In-office Sign Inspectors conduct detailed research into permit histories, examine sign drawings, and review related documents using multiple specialized software systems. The position also involves substantial public interaction, including providing clear guidance on procedures for obtaining use permits, variances, and appeals of interpretations. Inspectors assist applicants throughout the sign permit process, ensuring that all requirements are understood and properly fulfilled.

SALARY

Pay Range: $29.44 to $45.67 per hour.

Hiring Range: $29.44 to $41.42 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of experience in technical trades, municipal planning, real estate, or building inspections, including some public contact work.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Plan review experience.
  • Experience working with installation of signage.
  • Experience in sign maintenance, sign fabrication, or street marking work.
