About This Position

The Instrumentation & Control Specialist (I&C Specialist) apprenticeship program is a 3-year program designed to train apprentices into becoming Instrumentation and Control Specialists. Apprentices perform a variety of unskilled tasks while learning to maintain, repair and install instrumentation equipment and systems.

Assignments are routine at the beginning of the program. As an apprentice's knowledge and skill increases, the complexity of assignments increases until performance and technical ability are at the journeyman level. Apprentices will rotate between water, wastewater, lift stations, and remotes sites.

No experience is required prior to starting the program. All required training is paid for and provided by the City of Phoenix while on the job and being employed full-time.

Job Duties Include

  • Assist a skilled I&C by supplying materials, equipment, and tools at the jobsite.
  • Participate in the installation and removal of equipment, cables, and hardware.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of instrumentation or electronic controls and equipment 600 volts and below.
  • Perform less difficult or routine installations, connections, troubleshooting, and repairs of meters, sensors, and process control equipment.
  • Demonstrate superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.

Program tentative start date is March 2026.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Ability To

  • Comprehend mechanical, electrical, and electronic concepts, perform basic math and algebra, think logically, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Use hand tools and perform work with manual dexterity.
  • Work in hazardous locations and confined spaces.
  • Work at heights greater than 6 feet.

SALARY

  • $27.49 / hour starting wage as an apprentice.
  • $28.86 / hour after 1,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice.
  • $30.31 / hour after 2,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice.
  • $31.82 / hour after 3,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice.
  • $33.41 / hour after 4,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice.
  • $35.08 / hour after 5,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice.
  • $36.84 / hour after 6,000 OJT hours of successful performance as an apprentice, including promotion to I&C Specialist.

Apprentices must successfully and satisfactorily complete all assigned classroom and equipment training. During this period of the program, apprentices will be non-classified and paid as an I&C apprentice. After successful completion of the program, apprentices will promote into the I&C Specialist classification and serve a one-year City probationary period.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 290. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED at the time of hire.
  • Must successfully pass an Apprentice Aptitude Test with an 80% score or better.
  • Must be able to:
    • Read and comprehend written material at a level appropriate for the class.
    • Perceive the full range of the color spectrum to distinguish colors.
    • Work at heights greater than 6 feet and move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
    • Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
    • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Step 3 Successful applicants will be invited to complete a video interview. Invitations will be sent to your primary email address.

Step 4 Applicants that successfully submit a video interview will be invited to an information session which will include completing the following required tests: apprentice aptitude test, color identification test, and tool identification test.
