Pay Range: $46,592.00-$54,163.20 annually, depending on knowledge and experience. 
***Possession of Class B CDL required, Class A Preferred***

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Four (4) years of experience in an electrical or electronic work; or
  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Electricity or Electronics.
 
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license for equipment operated and any license, training, or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks.
  • Possession of Class B CDL, Class A Preferred.

Special Requirements:
  • Serve as emergency critical staffing during and after any emergency management event.
  • Regularly participates in on-call rotations for Public Works emergency after-hours coverage.
  • Occasionally work special events. 

JOB SUMMARY
The Traffic/Electrical Control Technician I is an entry level position in the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of modern traffic signal control, detection, communication, and display equipment, other traffic related control, monitoring, and display equipment and streetlights. 
 
An employee in this position is under the general supervision of the Traffic Electrical Control Supervisor but may work with considerable independence. Work performance is evaluated through observation and results. 
 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Completes pre-trip inspections, checks equipment for routine servicing needs, and provides minor maintenance work when required which includes ensuring that all equipment and systems are operational.
  • Operates equipment such as bucket trucks, forklifts, front-end loaders, backhoes, and excavators to perform maintenance and construction duties. This includes coordination with other teams internal and external as needed.
  • Operates equipment such as splicers, jackhammer, saws, and a variety of hand and power tools. 
  • Performs all levels of tasks including on-call, emergency, or routine maintenance for all traffic signal systems, various electronic signage, electronic speed detection systems, street light systems, 811 sunshine one locates, and others for conformance to city/state/federal standards, operational integrity, assesses and troubleshoots problems on-site, and performs demolition work as necessary. 
  • Performs preventative maintenance on city and FDOT traffic signals and streetlights and documents work in the work order system, and PM list. 
  • Ensures required inspections and work are completed to standards.
  • Keeps daily digital operating records on labor, time, equipment, materials and costs, in the department’s electronic asset management system, to generate reports and other metrics for management.
  • Follows safety rules and other accident prevention measures and directs traffic as necessary per MOT requirements and maintains readiness for malfunction of or accidents with traffic signal systems or streetlights. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge and skill in working with both ac and dc power.
  • Knowledge of modern personal computers. 
  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of test equipment, procedures, and tools used in electrical and electronic work. 
  • Ability to use power tools. 
  • Ability to read and understand engineering plans and drawings. 
  • Ability to interpret verbal and written instructions and to perform the job duties with a minimum of supervision. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, crouch, and crawl. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception. 
 
The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
An employee in this job is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
