The City of Pearland, TX is seeking to hire a full-time Health Services Officer to carry out health inspections, investigations, education, and enforcement to promote safe, sanitary environments across our community. The Health Services Officer earns a competitive hourly salary of $21.83-$23.63/hour, based on qualifications. Additionally, the city pays all premiums for our employees' dental, long-term disability protection, and life insurance plus the majority portion of the medical premium for employees and their dependents. We also offer a retirement plan through the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with a 2:1 employer match, life insurance, disability, access to the city's recreation fitness center, employee assistance program, educational assistance, 11 paid holidays and 2 designated paid holidays, paid vacation, sick leave, and an active wellness program focusing on physical, mental, and financial health.

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A HEALTH SERVICES OFFICER

This role will primarily emphasize responsibilities related to Health Services, investigations, and regulation.

Job Summary

The purpose of this class within the organization is to ensure the safety and health of the citizens of Pearland by vigilantly enforcing the standards established by the ordinances approved by the City Council and Texas Department of Health Services regard to Food Safety.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Inspects food sales and food service establishments to educate operators on sanitation and hygienic practices. Assures compliance through enforcement measures. Issue permits, reviews plans.
  • Receives and responds to citizen complaints; enters, processes, and acquires data for complaints, research, and investigations.
  • Composes, records, files, and maintains all computer and paper records of inspections, professional communications.
  • Responds to reports of rodent infestation, obnoxious odors, and trash containment.
  • Conducts communication by correspondence, phone, email, and or in person regarding complaints and provides solutions to obtain compliance in a timely manner.
  • Performs data entry on computer or other devices.
  • Enforces health ordinances through court action. Issues citations, builds case evidence, consults with prosecuting attorney, and testifies in court proceedings.

 

Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Food Managers Certification
  • 2 years of related experience

Special Certifications and Licenses:

  • Valid Texas Driver's License
  • TDLR Code Enforcement Officer Registration, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Food Managers Certification

 

Preferred:

  • CP-FS Certification
  • Registered Sanitarian
  • Five years of experience in Health Services
  • Bilingual/Spanish
