Duties: This is a supervisory and administrative position that is responsible for the planning, directing, and implementing recreational activities for the City of Pasadena. It possesses a strong focus in the recreation and community services program management areas. Work involves promoting recreational opportunities and creating disability awareness for special population groups. There is extensive public contact requiring exercise of judgment, initiative, and discretion based on knowledge of administrative policies and procedures of the City of Pasadena's Parks and Recreation Department. Oversee daily operations of the Verne Cox Multipurpose Recreation Center. Manage staff, volunteers, programs and a 15,000 square foot facility on a 6-acre park site. Prepare program budgets and maintains expenses within budget guidelines. Must be assertive and able to independently, effectively and professionally handle problem situations. Takes initiative and uses common sense to independently problem solve and wisely manage own use of time. Creates agendas and facilitates staff meetings. Organize and facilitate adaptive sports programs, events, and tournaments which may include but are not limited to, coaching, mentoring, playing various sports in a wheelchair on an outdoor field or in a gym, traveling out of town with a team for weekends or longer, and maintaining trends in the adaptive sports community. Assists in activities that may include field trips, dances, various adaptive sports, walking, swimming, track, arts and crafts, fishing, bowling, tennis, volleyball, basketball and more. Will be required to independently lesson plan for a number of programs as well as oversee, and evaluate, the day programs. Transports participants and staff in city bus or other city vehicles as necessary for programs, field trips, and special events, securing passengers and their wheelchairs with restraining devices. Assists in registering participants in RecDesk and/or making telephone calls confirming participation in programs, changes in a program and activities in City vans, trucks or buses. Implements programs independently, as needed. Supervises facility during rentals by outside groups. Assists in the maintenance, cleaning, and organization of the general facility, supplies, and equipment. Implements the design, production, and distribution of marketing materials and with promoting the Parks & Recreation Department, the Verne Cox Multipurpose Center, and its related services. Works night and weekend programs at various times throughout the year. Purchases necessary equipment and supplies needed for center programming. Directs a summer camp. This includes (but not limited to): preparation of materials, confirming outing locations, securing transportation, assigning staff to participants, contacting families prior to camp, leading the camp, cleaning up the camp and all things related to making the camp successful. Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements. Works the assigned schedule and complies with the City's timekeeping and attendance policy.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 5 years related experience with at least 2 years in a lead, supervisory or management role, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Texas Drivers License and a good driving record. First Aid and CPR certifications must be obtained within 6 months of hire. PREFERRED: Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification. Valid Texas Class B CDL with passenger endorsement or must obtain within 1 year of hire.
