The City of Pasadena Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department has an immediate need for Instructors knowledgeable and passionate about boxing and senior programs and classes.  These positions require experience in instructing techniques and fundamentals of boxing and senior programs as well as passion for working with a diverse community and providing exceptional services.

Instructor (Boxing Programs Instructor) will be responsible for developing and teaching dynamic, engaging boxing classes and workshops for youth and/or adults. The Boxing Instructors will create a safe, motivating environment that supports skill development, fitness, and confidence for participants of all experience levels. 

Instructor (Senior Programs Instructor) will be responsible for class curriculum and teaching assigned courses and workshops for adults ages 50 , covering areas such as arts and crafts, technology, enrichment, and social activities. 

Work Schedules
Instructor (Boxing Programs Instructor) - works up to 19 hours per week with a flexible work schedule that may include evenings and weekends. Working hours are Monday through Thursday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Fridays from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Hours are subject to change. Boxing Program Instructor may be assigned to teach at multiple facilities within the department based on program needs.

Instructor (Senior Programs Instructor)-
works up to 19 hours per week with a flexible work schedule that may include evenings and weekends. Working hours are Monday through Friday between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturdays between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours are subject to change. Classes for Senior Programs will be taught primarily in the mornings, and the Instructor may be assigned to teach at multiple facilities within the department based on program needs.

Appointment will be made for boxing or senior programs depending on experience and qualifications.  Please note that hours may be adjusted as needed to accommodate program requirements and class schedules.

Boxing Instructor (Part-Time) and Senior Programs Instructor (Part-Time)

  • Develops and teaches a variety of boxing lessons and workshops and boxing programs areas and sports for youth and/or adults. 
  • Implements programming and provides positive reinforcement to encourage a fun and supportive environment.
  • Establishes, and maintains cohesive group participation.
  • Adjusts and continually improves material flexibility in response to student needs, innovations in the field, and technological delivery options.
  • Provides supervision in the absence of the Site Coordinator. 
  • Provides support to other recreation sites as needed.
  • Follows and enforces established program policies, safety standards, and procedures.
  • Provides general program support, including answering participant questions.
  • Determines and recommends supplies and equipment needed for assigned classes; transports and ensures the security of equipment and supplies issued.
  • Continually observes and takes the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of program participants.
  • Trains for competitions on an amateur level. Provides health and nutritional awareness.
  • Builds a foundation for good sportsmanship. Develops participants’ character and self-esteem.
  • Promotes good public relations for the City; builds community relations with park, boxing site, and/or community center patrons, participants, community and other City Departments. 
  • Maintains records (attendance reports, progress reports, program planning proposals and accident reports) and submits reports in a timely manner.
  • Creates class curriculum and teaches assigned courses and workshops for adults ages 50 , covering areas such as arts and crafts, technology, enrichment, and social activities.
  • Creates a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment that supports older adults with varying abilities and skill levels.
  • Determines and recommends supplies and equipment needed for assigned classes.
  • Maintains attendance and class records. Works closely with older adult participants, volunteers, and community partners to promote engagement in senior programs.
  • Follows and enforces established program policies, safety standards, and procedures.
  • Provides general program support, including answering participant questions.
  • Ensures classroom spaces are properly set up and broken down before and after activities.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Senior Programs Coordinator.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Instructor (Boxing Programs Instructor) a minimum of one year of recent experience teaching boxing classes or at least one year of education in recreation/physical education or related field. 
  • Instructor (Senior Programs Instructor) a minimum of one year of recent experience teaching assigned courses and workshops for adults/ senior ages or at least one year of education in recreation/physical education or related field.

Desired qualifications:

  • Individuals with two or more years of recent experience in related field.  
  • Knowledge and experience in leading instruction of basic boxing fundamentals to a minimum of 15 participants at one time.
  • Certified Coach with USA Boxing within 6 months of employment.
  • Bilingual in Spanish. 

Selection Process:

The selection process may consist of any combination of training and experience evaluation, Subject Matter Expert (SME) review and the most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a written, structured interview, performance examination, and/ or departmental selection interview.
   

Vacancy Information:

There are two vacancies in the Recreation and Community Services Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill these vacancies and similar vacancies in the future. These positions are at-will, part-time up to 19 hours per week.
