What are the responsibilities and job description for the Swim Instructor - Seasonal position at City of Panama City Beach?
This position provides quality swim instruction to participants of all ages at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Teaching swimming lessons to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students.
- Maintains accurate records and completes necessary paperwork.
- Provides quality customer service; manages difficult customer situations; responds promptly to customer needs; solicits customer feedback to improve service; responds to requests for service and assistance.
- Ensures all possible safety measures are observed. Responds to emergency situations as required. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services and maintains accurate accident and incident reports.
- Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility which may include cleaning benches, chairs, tables, walkways, decks, restrooms, floors, lockers, etc.
- Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
- Complies with City and department rules, policies and procedures.
- Performs related duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 16 years of age at time of employment.
- Must pass a required swim test.
- Current certifications in CPR, AED, First Aid and Red Cross Basic Water Instructor at time of employment. Water Safety Instructor preferred.
- Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job.

- Knowledge of water rescue techniques.
- Skill in the provision of customer services.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Aquatics Specialist assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, Red Cross guidelines, and the employee handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related swim instruction duties. The unique needs and skills of each student contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to provide swimming instruction on a part-time basis at a public pool. Success in this position contributes to the provision of swimming lessons to community members.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, climb, crawl, reach, grasp, push, pull, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see and demonstrate manual dexterity. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions.
- The work is typically performed on a pool deck and actively a swimming pool in an aquatic facility. The employee is exposed the sun, water, noise and potentially irritating chemicals for prolonged periods of time. Work may be performed outdoors in hot, cold or inclement weather.
