The employee in this position is responsible for performing custodial duties, cashier services, ice resurfacing, building operations, crowd control, and general maintenance at an indoor ice arena. In addition, this position performs light building maintenance, grounds work, and equipment operation to support the Department of Community Development facilities, including the Palmer Municipal Golf Course.
Work is performed manually or with the assistance of equipment and requires the ability to operate a variety of tools, vehicles, and machinery. Tasks follow established standards and guidelines, with some independence in completing routine maintenance and repair work. Work hours may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
The position typically works forty hours (40) per week with a schedule that may include nights, weekends, and early morning shifts.
- Perform general custodial duties: sweeping, mopping, trash removal, window cleaning, wall washing, and restroom cleaning.
- Remove snow and ice from walkways and building entrances.
- Operate cash register, telephone, automatic floor scrubber, snow blower, iceresurfacer, hand tools, and small power tools.
- Observe and enforce all facility rules and regulations.
- Prepare and maintain the ice sheet using a mechanically operated iceresurfacer.
- Monitor arena refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
- Maintain, operate, and perform basic refrigeration and compressor duties, including R-22 systems.
- Sharpen and repair skates.
- Maintain and clean dasher boards, seating areas, locker rooms, and auxiliary spaces.
- Repair goal nets.
- Assist with special events such as tournaments and clinics.
- Monitor patrons for safe and proper facility use.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Parks & Facilities Manager
- Perform light building maintenance including painting, drywall repair, light remodeling, fixture replacement (plumbing and electrical), HVAC filter changes, cleaning A/C coils, and basic heating system maintenance.
- Conduct interior and exterior door maintenance, lock replacement, and keypad lock changes.
- Perform roofing, carpentry, concrete work, and installation of exterior siding as needed.
- Maintain flags, including raising and lowering.
- Operate equipment such as man lifts, bucket trucks, chain saws, plow trucks, loaders, cement mixers, and drain cleaning equipment.
- Assist with parking lot lighting, sidewalk repair, roofing and gutter work, and other building-related tasks.
- Perform manual labor in support of facility operations, golf course upkeep, and building maintenance.
- Comply with all safety requirements and use PPE as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Parks & Facility Manager or Director of Community Development.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid Alaska Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
- Availability to work varying hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.

- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with patrons, staff, volunteers, and the public.

- Basic refrigeration and compressor system knowledge.
- Sound system operation.
- Minimum 2 years of experience or equivalent knowledge in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and controls.
- Knowledge of the latest adopted building, plumbing, and mechanical codes.
- Ability to read building plans and blueprints.
- Skill in safe operation of tools, machinery, and equipment required for maintenance tasks.
- Basic understanding of golf course operations & maintenance.
