What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lift Station Mechanical Technician position at City of Palm Coast?

Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to maintain, inspect and repair the Wastewater pumping stations and Wastewater Plants. Employees in this classification function at an entry level position. Employee is responsible for weekly pump station inspections, annual maintenance of pumps and related equipment, cleaning pump stations and other various tasks. Knowledge will be acquired by working with experienced staff and on the job training.

  • Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
  • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.
  • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.
  • Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
  • Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts.  Installs special functional and structural parts in devices. 
  • Lubricates and cleans parts.
  • Start devices to test their performance.
  • Ability to use electrical meters such as a voltage meter, amp meter, and a megohm meter. To monitor and record electrical control panels.
  • Make confined space entries with crew to inspect and make repairs if necessary.
  • Emergency call back and rotating call duty. (Determined by Supervision based on ability).
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one (1) year responsible experience in public utilities or other large scale commercial pumping systems, motors and electrical equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. 

CDL B license will need to be obtained within (1) year of employment.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.        
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE, which includes but not limited to hard hat, gloves, eye protection.
  • Knowledge of pumps, motors, gearboxes, electrical and other applicable equipment.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to lift, move or carry objects up to 50 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles; utilize feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or navigating narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs; move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hands to handle or feel objects.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to push and/or pull over 100 pounds.
  • While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, excessive noise, vehicular traffic, and dampness/humidity. While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed to possible bodily injury from electrical shock; falling from high, exposed places; confined spaces and moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and machinery.
