What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Mechanic position at City of Palm Beach Gardens?
Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in maintaining emergency vehicles for the Fire Department.

- Determines preventative maintenance needs, provides necessary maintenance and repairs for all fire vehicles, including heavy fire apparatus, and equipment.
- Checks operating efficiency of fire vehicles, heavy fire apparatus, and fire mechanical equipment.
- Determines stock needs and orders and maintains replacement parts and supplies.
- Repairs and adjusts engines, transmissions, brake systems, hydraulic systems, water pumps and accessories.
- Ensures pump systems provide appropriate volumes of water at specified pressures during periodic and required annual pump testing.
- Tunes engines, cleans, repairs and replaces carburetors, fuel systems, pumps, strainers, fuel lines, fuel tanks, gauges, wires and reconditions electrical systems.
- Performs general maintenance of all fire equipment including oiling and lubricating various components.
- Performs heavy vehicle systems and component failure analyses.
- Performs inspection and conformity to required Department of Transportation standards for commercial vehicles.
- Ensures fire apparatus conforms to commercial Department of Transportation and National Fire Protection Association (N.F.P.A.) standards.
- Responds to emergency callouts and performs emergency field repairs on fire apparatus and related equipment.
- Provides input to staff regarding budget, equipment utilization, equipment replacement and equipment needs.
- Assists the Operation Manager in the preparation and management of the emergency response and fleet repair budget.
- Develops specifications for new fire apparatus and equipment.
- Provides for overall management of the Fire Department fleet of emergency response apparatus, and staff/support vehicles.
- Provides direction to the mechanic apprentice, temporary assistants, and/or interns in shop related duties.
- Provides classroom and hands-on instruction to Fire Department personnel pertaining to maintenance and operation of fire apparatus and related equipment.
- Assists the Deputy Fire Chief with the development of specifications for new fire apparatus and equipment.
- Attends regular training to maintain basic and advanced skills and certifications.
- Assists the Deputy Chief and Fleet Operations Manager in identifying appropriate training opportunities for heavy vehicle mechanics and the apprentice mechanic with a goal of providing succession training.
- Performs related duties like the above in scope and function as required
- Performs emergency operations as required
- Perform any other related duties as required
- High School diploma or equivalent, and
- Considerable experience in diesel mechanics, maintenance management or closely related field
- Five (5) years of experience in fire apparatus repair and maintenance work, and
- Level 1 Fire Apparatus EVT Certification and Level 1 Ambulance EVT certification
- T4 Heavy-Duty Truck, Brakes, T5 Heavy-Duty Truck, Suspension & Steering, A-4 Suspension & Steering, A-5 Brakes Automotive/Medium Heavy-Duty Service Excellence (ASE) certifications; and,
- F1 Maintenance, Inspection & Testing of Fire Apparatus, F2 Design & Performance Standards, E0 Inspection, Maintenance & Testing, E-1 Design and performance of Fire Apparatus/Ambulance Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications, or
- Ability to obtain all certifications within one year of hire
- Valid Florida State driver's license with CDL certification type B, or the ability to obtain one within probationary period.
