What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Inspector I (Mechanical Trade) position at City of Palm Beach Gardens?
Provides statutorily mandated, technical field inspection of permitted construction projects to ensure strict compliance of permitted work with all enacted codes and standards in effect at the time of permit application.
- Perform field inspection of permitted and un-permitted work for compliance with applicable standards.
- Reviews plans both in the field and in the office to insure all work is compliance with the approved construction documents
- Documents both approvals and deficiencies on site in a legible and concise fashion and returns the records of those deficiencies to the department
- Performs data entry as necessary to record the results in the City data system
- Investigates complaints both on permitted work and non-permitted work, properly documents all violations noted upon said complaint inspections
- Placards unsafe structures as authorized by the Building Official
- Posts stop work orders, and documents the specific conditions under which the construction in violation may resume as authorized by the Building Official
- Investigate complaints of unlicensed construction activity and forwards the results to the appropriate licensing authority as necessary
- Confers with owners, architects, engineers, field personnel, and others as necessary to explain the complex technical code requirements applicable to each permitted construction project to others
- Performs studies, reports and related research as directed by supervision
- Answers written correspondence as necessary
- Maintains a safe work environment which is free from hazards and performs the duties normal to the position in a safe manner. Reviews the safety condition of the project work site being inspected and document deficiencies noted to the appropriate responsible party
- Complies with all City, departmental and divisional policies and procedures both written and as expressed verbally by supervision
- Interact supportively with other city agencies and departments as well as state, county, and other public officials as directed by supervision
- All other duties as directed by supervision
- Performs all work in compliance with applicable codes, statutory requirements, applicable standards of conduct
- Performs emergency operations as required
- Performs all other related duties as required or assigned
Serve as a member of various City employee committees, as assigned
- High School Diploma or equivalent, and
- Considerable experience in the construction industry, and
- Licensure by the State of Florida as a Building Inspector in one (1) discipline of inspection per Florida Statute 468 or the ability to obtain a provisional license within the first ninety (90) day of employment, and
- The ability to achieve additional licensing every three years, and
- Valid State of Florida Driver's License with a good driving record.
