Role Description The Deputy City Attorney is a full-time, on-site role based in Palm Bay, FL, providing legal support to city departments, boards, and elected officials. This position will draft, review, and revise ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The role involves conducting legal research, preparing written opinions, and providing timely legal advice on matters including labor and employment, public policy, and municipal operations. The Deputy City Attorney will represent the city in negotiations, administrative proceedings, and, when appropriate, litigation, while collaborating with internal stakeholders to manage risk and support informed decision-making.
Qualifications
- Strong litigation skills, including the ability to manage discovery, prepare witnessess for deposition or trial, and to draft and argue motions.
- Demonstrated ability to provide clear, practical Legal Advice to diverse stakeholders, including leadership, staff, and boards.
- Advanced Research skills to analyze legal issues, prepare written opinions, and support policy and contract development.
- Effective Negotiation skills to represent the city in discussions, settlements, and agreements with internal and external parties.
- Seven (7) years’ experience in criminal or civil litigation and membership in good standing with the Florida Bar
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts in accessible language.
- Demonstrated sound judgment, ethical decision-making, and ability to manage multiple matters in a fast-paced government environment.
