PLANT OPERATOR TRAINEE [FLSA: non-exempt; SHIFT: 40 hrs/week; Mon. - Fri.]

Under close supervision, performs technical work in the operation of the wastewater treatment plant.  Work involves assisting the Plant Operator(s) in performing daily operation techniques for wastewater treatment facilities including; reading various gauges and meters, collecting lab samples, and performing, or assisting in performing, required analysis and tests, and learning how to inspect the plant for efficient operation of equipment. Works with certified operators in making decisions and coordinating the proper operation of equipment.  Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Lead Operator.  This is medium work requiring the exertion of 40 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently; the work requires considerable physical activity.

Trains in the monitoring and maintenance of the proper surveillance of all  wastewater plant processes, equipment and controls to ensure efficient operation of the plant and compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, and ordinances and regulations.

Performs skilled work in assisting in the operation of wastewater treatment facilities both inside and outside.

Trains in learning to adjust equipment to regulate flow rates or modify treatment processes in accordance with need determined by observation and tests.

Makes plant equipment repairs and calibrations; performs preventative maintenance on plant equipment with direction from operators.

Inputs data accurately into formatted formats for submittal to regulatory agencies.

Checks all plant equipment for proper operation; operates automotive equipment and performs routine maintenance tasks.

Cleans and services pumps, motors, and other equipment and lubricates to manufacturer's specifications.  Maintains inspection, activity, and equipment records.

Maintains general cleanliness of the plant and performs various grounds keeping tasks.

May be assigned to shift work.  May be required to work weekends and holidays.

Performs after-hours standby duties and responds to emergency situations as directed.

Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary. 

Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED.  A valid Florida driver license is required. Experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in a water or wastewater treatment plant is preferred.

Must be willing and available to work as part of an on-call rotation. Must obtain a Wastewater “C” Florida Certification from the State of Florida Department of Environmental Regulations within two (2) years of assignment to the position.  The trainee must apply for the first available examination in which they meet the time in grade, as required by the Department of Environmental Regulations.  The trainee will be afforded the opportunity to take the examination twice.  The two (2) year period will be extended, if necessary, to allow the trainee two (2) opportunities to sit for the examination.
