Description
The City of Overland Park has a full-time Farmers Market Supervisor
position available in the Parks and Recreation Department.
Summary
The Farmers Market Supervisor plays a central leadership role in shaping
the community experience, educational outreach, and daily operations of
the Overland Park Farmers Market (OPFM). This position leads the
development and execution of events, school visits, and programming that
foster food literacy and connect the public to local agriculture and
foods. The Supervisor works closely with schools, nonprofits, local
partners, and
businesses to create dynamic opportunities that advance OPFMs philosophy
and values while supporting a thriving downtown.
A key component of this role includes recruiting, training, and
overseeing a team of volunteers, ensuring they are empowered to
meaningfully
support the markets operations and values. The Supervisor also curates
entertainment and special activities to enhance OPFMs vibrant, family-
friendly atmosphere and foster ongoing community connection.
In addition to these public-facing responsibilities, the Supervisor
helps manage essential logisticscoordinating vendor layouts and
paperwork,
indirectly supervising market attendants, enforcing safety protocols and
market rules, and overseeing food access initiatives such as Double Up
Food Bucks and the token system. The role also includes supporting
marketing efforts and occasional farm and food inspections.
Responsibilities
Leads community outreach efforts, including the development and
implementation of events, educational programming and curriculum,
entertainment, and community visits that align with OPFMs mission to
promote food literacy and support local agriculture.
Collaborates with schools, nonprofits, and local organizations to
develop and implement educational programs and outreach initiatives that
connect the community to local agriculture and food systems.
Engages with businesses including the Business Improvement District
(BID) to foster partnerships, enhance downtown vitality, and create
mutually
beneficial opportunities that support the Farmers Market and surrounding
community.
Builds and maintains partnerships with local organizations, schools, and
community groups to foster meaningful engagement and broaden the
OPFMs impact.
Oversees volunteer coordination including recruitment, onboarding,
training, scheduling, and ongoing support to ensure volunteers
contribute
meaningfully to market operations and culture.
Provides on-site market management and operational support during each
market day to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local
regulations.
Indirectly supervises market attendants and vendors, supporting their
performance, guidance, and expectations.
Enforces vendor and shopper compliance with market rules and policies.
Assists with food safety protocols and ensures all vendors follow proper
guidelines.
Supports the development and implementation of marketing strategies,
including social media content and campaigns.
Conducts on-site farm and food inspections per department guidelines.
Assists the Market Manager with vendor and staff orientations, training
materials, and the onboarding of new vendors and staff.
Aids in hiring, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions.
Creates and maintains staff and/or volunteer schedules ensuring all
shifts are covered within allocated hours and shift times are
appropriate for
market needs.
Aids in vendor selection and supports the layout of vendors for each
market day, ensuring a balanced and intenti onal flow.
Manages the Double Up Food Bucks and token program, including all
related equipment and reporting responsibilities.
Assists with administrative and clerical tasks, including data
collection, internal documentation, and report creation.
Maintains strong professional relationships with vendors, staff,
shoppers, partners, Downtown Overland Park businesses, and other city
departments.
Prepares weekly, monthly, and seasonal reports for staffing, revenue,
expenses, and customer/vendor surveys as needed.
Works the hours necessary to meet all responsibilities and must be
available for communication with staff, vendors, and the public as
needed.
Maintains punctuality, meets deadlines, and begins and ends assignments
on time.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREM
Salary : $60,000 - $90,000
