Fleet Services Department
The Fleet Services Department is responsible for providing fleet maintenance and repair, including vehicle procurement, fuel management and distribution, accident repairs, data tracking, and fleet analysis for over 1,000 City-owned motor vehicles and equipment. The mission statement of the Fleet Services Department is to provide safe, reliable, efficient and long-life operating vehicles and equipment to the City of Ontario through the application of preventative maintenance, timely repairs and replacement.
Public Works Agency
The Public Works Agency provides essential construction, integrated waste and recycling collection, fleet and facility maintenance and repair services to the citizens and businesses of Ontario through the Parks and Steets Maintenance, Municipal Services, Design and Construction, Engineering, Integrated Waste, and Administration Departments. The Public Works Agency strives to meet the daily challenges of maintaining exceptional levels of service to our residents and community, providing stellar customer service, and maximizing all resources to develop and maintain value for the City. The Agency has an annual budget of over $152 million.

The functions typically performed by the Senior Equipment Mechanic include the following:
A high school diploma or recognized equivalent.
Experience
Three years of diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of medium and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment such as refuse trucks, graders, tractors, cranes, street sweepers, vectors, etc., as well as automobiles and light duty vehicles and equipment. Completion of vocational training programs in automotive or equipment maintenance and repair and possession of an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Duty Truck certification may substitute for one year of experience.
License
A valid Class C California driver's license and an acceptable driving record at time of appointment; ability to obtain a Class A California driver's license within six months of appointment.
Certifications
Must possess or have the ability to obtain an Air Conditioning Freon Recycling Certificate within six (6) months of appointment (hire).
Special Requirements
This position is assigned to work an evening shift (2 pm to 10:30 pm) Monday to Thursday and 1:30 to 10:00 pm on Friday. *The City shall pay a shift differential for hours worked after 5:00 PM.
The selected employee must have their own general heavy duty mechanic tool set.
Desirable
Possession of one or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Duty Truck certifications; experience in the repair of Refuse vehicles and equipment operated by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).How to Apply

The functions typically performed by the Senior Equipment Mechanic include the following:
- Independently diagnoses problem causes and determines the extent of needed repairs or adjustments for medium and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment such as refuse trucks, graders, tractors, cranes, street sweepers, or vactors.
- Diagnoses and repairs electrical system faults/failures.
- Performs routine preventative maintenance on all types of vehicles and equipment in the City's fleet.
- Inspects and repairs Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel systems.
- Performs major engine tune-ups involving testing, adjustment, and/or replacement of fuel systems, spark plugs, points, and related equipment.
- Repairs suspension systems, including bushings, kingpins, tie rods, ball joints, and leaf springs.
- Utilizes welding techniques to perform minor body repairs and to fabricate special equipment.
- Completes repair order records on maintenance software indicating task, hours expended, and parts used.
- Cleans and maintains work areas.
- Performs preventative maintenance and repairs small equipment such as generators, leaf blowers, or lawn mowers.
- May drive service vehicles and field equipment into and out of the service bays for maintenance work and to perform road tests.
- Follows safety rules and procedures to ensure the safety of self, co-workers, and the public.
