Park Maintenance Technician

The city of Ontario’s Parks and Streets Maintenance Department is offering an excellent opportunity for an individual ready to be the driving force behind the community’s advancement. The Park Maintenance Technician is responsible for leading a small crew, and performing skilled work in a variety of park, parkways, median, and other public service activities involving installation, maintenance and repair work using hand tools, trucks, and heavy equipment.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to operate and maintain a variety of power equipment and hand tools; operate light and medium-duty equipment; and perform other related work as necessary. Additionally, the successful candidate will be a role model for the City's Approach to Public Service and exhibit the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" – Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant.

The Parks and Streets Maintenance Department

The Parks and Streets Maintenance Department is committed to creating and strengthening community value by enhancing the quality of life in the City of Ontario through our professional services, maintaining and preserving parkland, public facilities, and City infrastructure. This includes the maintenance service programs and operations to the City park system, public grounds, roadway maintenance, storm drains, street sweeping, sidewalks and public right-of-way, tree trimming, graffiti abatement, traffic signs, street painting and striping, debris removal, and contract maintenance services.

Within these program areas, the department provides services for non-structural overlays and pothole repair, landscape and irrigation maintenance, street striping and sign repairs, concrete repair and maintenance of sidewalk/curb/gutter, street sweeping and debris removal, and graffiti abatement.

The Public Works Agency provides essential construction, integrated waste and recycling collection, fleet and facility maintenance and repair services to the citizens and businesses of Ontario through the Parks and Steets Maintenance, Municipal Services, Design and Construction, Engineering, Integrated Waste, and Administration Departments. The Public Works Agency strives to meet the daily challenges of maintaining exceptional levels of service to our residents and community, providing stellar customer service, and maximizing all resources to develop and maintain value for the City. The Agency has an annual budget of over $152 million.

Examples of Essential Functions

The functions typically performed by the Park Maintenance Technician include the following:


  • Drives a truck and operates heavy equipment such as skip loaders, trenchers, riding mowers, brush chippers, and smaller equipment such as paint sprayers, hydro blasters, and chain saws.
  • Installs, monitors, maintains, and repairs irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Sprays herbicides, weeds, and edges.
  • Prunes, trims, and removes trees, shrubs, and brush.
  • Mows, edges, and rakes turf area in parks, parkways, and median strips.
  • Completes daily service requests and work logs.
  • Leads and participates in the work of a small crew, coordinates assignments with crew, reviews finished work and oversees worksite safety.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

High School diploma or recognized equivalent.

Experience

Three years of park maintenance, tree maintenance, or light construction work.

Desirable

Three years of experience leading a crew in park and tree maintenance.
At least one year of experience in operation and maintenance of bucket truck, chipper, and chainsaws.
Has a non-expired Class A driver's license.
Familiarity with proper tree pruning practices.

Licenses

Valid Class C California Driver's License and Class B California Driver's License with appropriate endorsements depending on areas of assignment. Acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Special Requirement

May be required to return to work during non-business hours in an emergency situation and to perform work on a scheduled stand-by assignment.
