Nature of Work: This work involves participating in and supervising the care, custody, and cleaning of an assigned city park and recreation facility which has a large volume of activities. Employees in this class are required to live in the park if living quarters are provided and are on call 24 hours each working day. Considerable public relations and independence is exercised. The following is a list of parks cared for by the incumbents in this class: Elmwood, Levi Carter, N.P. Dodge, Seymour Smith, Hummel, Glen Cunningham, Standing Bear, Zorinsky Lakes, Benson, Fontenelle, and Miller.

Education and Experience: (The knowledge, skills, and abilities above may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.)

  • Four (4) years of experience in the minor maintenance of park equipment, machinery and tools in performing manual labor relating to park work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of park policies and regulations relating to the use of park facilities by the public
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of the care and maintenance of buildings and grounds
  • Knowledge of the use of fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and other disease management techniques used in turf management
  • Skill in the operation of the assigned tools and equipment
  • Ability to communicate with park patrons to enforce park regulations and resolve issues
  • Ability to view park surroundings to monitor park activities and to inspect park property for vandalism
  • Ability to recognize and treat diseases and insect and abiotic problems of turf
  • Ability to maintain records and complete reports
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment, machinery, and tools in the performance of assigned duties
  • Ability to understand oral or written instructions
  • Ability to read and write the English language
  • Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public
  • Ability to balance, bend, stand, walk and push from 76 to 100% of the time; reach and stoop, from 51 to 75% of the time; squat and kneel from 26 to 50% of the time; and climb, crouch, crawl and pull up to 25% of the time
  • Ability to move and transport objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds up to 33% of the time; objects up to twenty (20) pounds 34 to 66% of the time; and objects up to ten (10) pounds 67 to 100% of the time

Essential Functions: (Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this classification.)

  • Assigns and provides work direction to subordinates engaged in the care, custody, and cleaning of assigned park and recreation facility
  • Monitors activities of park patrons and enforces park regulations; confronts problem behaviors or calls for assistance; inspects park facilities for vandalism and completes necessary reports
  • Makes reservations for use of park facilities; collects, records and deposits park user fees
  • Removes tree limbs, brush, litter, and other debris at park facilities; cleans restrooms; mows grass and removes snow on park property
  • Oversees and participates in minor repairs and routine maintenance on motorized equipment and playground and picnic equipment; completes reports documenting maintenance and repair performed
  • Diagnoses plant problems and applies pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer to promote turf health
  • Performs snow removal duties as assigned
  • Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification

Special Qualifications: Other information:

Must possess a valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with “N” endorsement and air brake certification or a CDL learner’s permit for such a license by the end of the probationary period.

Must possess a current category 04 Certified Federal and State of Nebraska Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate by the end of the probationary period.

Must possess a 2nd grade hoisting and portable engineer's certificate by the end of the probationary period.

Must possess a forklift operator's certificate by the end of the probationary period.

Pay Range: $18.17 Hourly
