Job Summary

The Utility Maintenance Group is currently seeking a Lead Maintenance Worker for the Sewer I & I Crew.

A Lead Utility Maintenance Worker performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water distribution and wastewater collection system. The Lead Utility Maintenance Worker leads the crew in the absence of the supervisor and coaches and mentors new employees and crew members.

This crew is responsible for making repairs on various pipe types while adhering to City of Olathe water & wastewater connection specifications & minimizing I & I.

Members of thiscrew must have:
  • Ability to navigate GIS and Cartegraph
  • Attention to detail and accuracy for data entry in billing system to ensure accurate customer billing
  • Ability to effectively work with citizens, plumbers, builders, and engineers when coordinating maintenance and repair work

The Lead Utility Maintenance Worker performs skilled heavy equipment operation work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the city's infrastructure. A significant portion of their time is spent assisting the Team Supervisor with overseeing and coordinating daily tasks and activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs the most difficult and complex types of duties and provides the oversight of other maintenance workers performing work in dangerous and hazardous conditions; operates a variety of equipment including excavators, loaders, trucks, snowplows, salt spreader, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, electronic test meters, pumps, and various other vehicles and equipment; responds to questions and concerns from the general public, contractors, and businesses.
  • Assists Team Supervisor in coordinating and overseeing daily tasks of utilities construction personnel; assumes duties of Team Supervisor in the absence of the Team Supervisor; assists Team Supervisor in training, developing, and evaluating assigned staff; participates in and coordinate emergency operations including snow removal when required.
  • Performs regular on-call duties, including frequent nights/weekends/holidays, and overtime hours as required to respond to the emergency maintenance, repair and customer service needs of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • The Lead position should show great leadership in the organization, working by the Leadership Philosophy.


Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of three years progressive experience in performing utilities (water/sewer) or construction maintenance activities, the ability to safely and effectively excavate around utilities for utility repairs, and a demonstrated mastery of maintenance worker competencies and skills are required. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility and must possess basic computer knowledge.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required along with the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A class A commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsement are required within six months of employment. A Class I ABC certificate in Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection is required.

Environmental or Physical Demands: Utility Maintenance Workers perform their job duties outside in all types of weather and are exposed to conditions including sun, wind, rain, snow, ice, pollen, dust, fumes, sanitary waste, and other allergens or airborne particles. They will work in confined spaces and trenches. They are exposed to noise from traffic and equipment. They must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs moving one’s whole body to lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl while handling or carrying materials. They will operate a variety of hand and power tools, powered equipment, and commercial vehicles. They may drive or ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the workday. Must be able to work safely in distracting situations including high volume traffic areas.
