Definition:

Protects life and provides for the safety and welfare of persons in the pool area of the Aquatic & Fitness Center; does related work as required. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintains constant vigilance over persons in and around the Aquatic and Fitness Center Pool; rescues swimmers using various rescue techniques and equipment; administers first-aid; administers resuscitation techniques until the arrival of emergency personnel; maintains order and discipline at pool; observes that safety is maintained; works with groups and individuals; offers and renders advice and assistance whenever requested; supervises swimming meets; makes bromine and PH tests and records results; maintains a clean environment.  

Requirements:

Considerable Knowledge of: current and acceptable life saving techniques. Knowledge of: methods of handling persons in distress; local swimming regulation, and of the proper methods and procedures for handling life saving and first aid equipment and apparatus. Skill and Ability to: learn and execute first-aid and life restoration procedures. 

Ability to: read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position (communication may include such forms as American Sigh Language or Braille); render first aid to distressed persons; enforce swimming regulations; swim with agility and skill; remain calm and take decisive action in difficult situations; note and report hazardous swimming conditions. 

Special Requirements:

License: Possession of a current and valid lifeguarding/lifesaving certificate issued by the American Red Cross or Y.M. C. A, or the Boy Scouts of America. 

Tools and Equipment Used:

Floatation devices, swimming aids such as kick boards and pool buoys, pool vacuum, nozzle and hose, scrub brush and power washer. 

Physical Demands:

Position requires employee to: Continuously sit; frequently talk or hear; occasionally swim and rescue bathers, stand, and walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, reach with hands and arms, smell, lift up to 50 lbs. 

Special vision requirements: Close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employee must be able to perform swimming and rescue skills. 

Work Environment:

Position requires employee to: Continuously work in wet, humid conditions; and frequently work with various pool chemicals.
