Paramedic or EMT

Responsible for assuming the role of patient advocate on all Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency runs. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): utilizing Region 4 standards as a minimum, provide appropriate patient extrication, treatment and transport; effectively evaluate patients’ signs and symptoms and apply first-aid or life support as needed; operate tools and equipment effectively; instill confidence in any patient suffering from illness or injury and displaying dignity, courtesy, discretion, skill, diligence and discipline; inspect, clean and maintain vehicles, equipment and property; proper completion of paperwork and forms; follow all departmental protocols and governing rules and regulations; other duties as requested to meet the needs of the Department and City of O’Fallon.

212.2 Essential Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Responsible for responding to medical emergency calls and providing medical attention to sick or injured, including 9-1-1 calls.
  • Responsible for responding to structure fires and being readily available to treat sick or injured.
  • Responsible for patient evaluation, extrication, triage, preparation for transport, and for the orderly transfer of the patient at a medical facility.
  • Responsible for preparation and administration (License Level Applicable) of all narcotics and medications, including the inventory of all items.
  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge of all medications, including trade and generic names, therapeutic effects, indications for usage, contradictions for usage, side effects and routes of administration.
  • Responsible for the method, timeliness and level of medical care on all emergency calls.
  • Responsible for inspecting vehicle and equipment to promote fleet, personnel and patient safety.
  • Responsible for cleaning the vehicle and equipment after each run.
  • Responsible for writing accurate, professional and legible reports.
  • Regular attendance and reporting to work on time.
  • Responsible to maintain clean crew quarters and launder department laundry.


212.3 Marginal Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintains working relationships and serves as liaison with other medical agencies and hospital facilities by coordinating activities with other crews, divisions and agencies.
  • Assist in identifying, developing and implementing departmental training and community outreach programs.
  • Assists in conducting in-service training pertaining to EMS activities.
  • Makes presentations to groups and interacts with citizens.
  • Conducts tours of facility.
  • Performs QRV (Quick Response Vehicle) duties at the direction of the shift supervisor.
  • Performs various other duties and functions as required or assigned within are of expertise or scope of the position.


212.4 SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports to the Emergency Medical Services Supervisors.

212.6 Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, Region IV Paramedic Certification, State of Illinois Paramedic License and:
  • At least one year of experience as an EMT, or a combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Valid C driver's license required or greater.

Considerable Knowledge of:

  • Paramedic or EMT techniques and procedures.
  • Standard of business practices, policies and procedures.


Knowledge of:

  • Relevant legal and technical terminology encountered in the course of work.
  • Modern office management practices and procedures, equipment and systems.


Skills and Ability to:

  • Maintain a positive attitude; demonstrate a commitment to City goals and values, and to exhibit a positive overall customer service-oriented manner and a willingness to work together in a team environment.
  • Maintain all continuing educations as required by Region IV, HSHS St. Elizabeth's EMS System, and four-year recertification requirements per the State of Illinois or assigned education.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Comfort emotionally upset persons.
  • Handle medical emergencies in a competent fashion.
  • Safely drive a vehicle in an emergency manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
  • Analyze information and statistics to solve problems through deductive and inductive reasoning.
  • Work independently on complex and confidential assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Perform and accomplish requirements of the job using appropriate general office equipment (i.e., fax machine, copy machine, calculator, multi-function telephone).
  • Use basic computer word processing, presentation and spreadsheet/database management applications (i.e., Microsoft work/Access/Excel Applications).
  • Strong working knowledge of internet and performing internet-based searches.
  • Use and set up equipment needed for presentations (i.e., projector, laptop computer, and video equipment).
  • Comprehend and make inferences from written materials.
  • Understand, interpret, explain and apply relevant policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Attend to details, calculate numerical formulas and verify accuracy of amounts and calculations.
  • Be able to lift equipment and patients onto a stretcher and then onto ambulance for transport. Be able to stand for extended periods of time and have the ability to walk up and down flights of stairs.
  • See clearly at close and far distances with or without corrective lenses, identify and distinguish colors, adjust focus and see to the right and left while focused on an object (peripheral vision).
  • Recognize and respect diversity and work effectively with peoples of other cultures.


Candidates will perform the following essential physical requirements during WorkSTEPS assessment. Actions include, but not limited to:

  • Able to ascend/descend from truck
  • Lift and carry a simulated and weighted backboard device
  • Lift 110 lbs. 18in from floor to waist to simulate safe lifting of stretcher
  • Push and pull weighted sled to simulate stretcher operations
  • Keeling, stooping, crouching for extended times
