Water System Maintainer
Distinguishing Features of the Class: Work involves maintenance and repair of municipal water and wastewater system including collection, filtration, and distribution. Work is performed under general supervision of the Superintendent of DPW and may include supervision over the work of laborers. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities:
Installs, maintains and repairs water and sanitary main valves, fire hydrants and fittings;
Taps water mains and installs, maintains, replaces and repairs water and sanitary services to facilities;
Locates and repairs leaks in water mains and services;
Installs, repairs, maintains and flushes fire hydrants;
Operates a variety of power hand tools and power-driven equipment such as jackhammers, air compressors, backhoes, moles and trucks;
May assist in the reading of consumer water meter, installing new meters and replacement meters;
Maintains and repairs Water System building, grounds and equipment necessary for the maintenance of the water distribution system and the sanitary collection system;
Ensures that proper safety practices are followed;
May generate reports related to duties.
Full Performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics:
Good knowledge of relationships between water collection, filtration, water distribution and sanitary collection systems. Good knowledge of practices, tools and equipment used in the installation of water and sanitation mains, services, hydrants, valves, and fittings. Working knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as they relate to water distribution and sanitary collection systems. Ability to read and work from plans and sketches. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to communicate effectively with superiors and subordinates. Mechanical aptitude. Willingness to be on call and respond to emergency situations. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; and one year experience in water or sanitary system maintenance or a related field; or
- One (1) year experience in mechanical equipment maintenance and operation.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a Grade D Water Distribution Operators certificate issued by the NYS Department of Health within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
Possession of a driver’s license issued by the NYS DMV at time of appointment.
Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm with a paid 1/2 hour lunch
