Performs a variety of supervisory and administrative work in the day-to-day operations of the City's Transit System.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Senior Transit Operations Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises lead direction over bus operators.
On assigned shift, supervises daily operations of transit system; schedules bus operator, assigns buses to routes, advises bus operator of detours, covers assignments due to vacation, illness, holidays and no-shows; counsels bus operator on complaints from public; performs road observations and on-board observations. Makes day-to-day decisions concerning operations and schedules.
Makes entries to employees’ timecards including adjustments for sick leave, vacation, floating holidays and administrative leave on daily basis; totals timecards on bi-weekly basis; approves leaves, time off, vacation; issues supervisors reports; generates performance appraisals and commendations for employee files.
Monitors two-way radio for bus operator communications, emergencies, breakdowns and traffic conditions; arranges bus swaps with maintenance; relays information between driver and mechanics via telephone or two-way radio; arranges bus preparation with maintenance for special service orders.
Takes appointments and dispatches appropriate vehicles for senior/disabled/Dial A Ride passengers; provides information to public concerning Norwalk Transit Service, Metropolitan Transit Authority and other public agencies via telephone, mail and at the Customer Services.
Performs administrative functions such as attending meetings to correct operational problems, improve transit service and provides feedback to the Senior Transit Operations Supervisor or, Executive Director.
Compiles operational data and reports for transportation planning.
Assists in resolving complaints and problems related to bus scheduling and trip assignments; follows up on complaints and makes changes if appropriate.
As needed, provides emergency bus operator relief.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to perform receptive actions, finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, talk, hear, walk, and reach. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance and crouch.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works both inside and outside. The noise level is occasionally noisy in field settings.
