Specialized, technical work relating to all phases and types of fire protection plans and systems, review of building plans for code compliance and conduct fire and life safety inspections in all types of new construction, remodels and existing structures. Work is performed under the direction of the Fire Marshall. This position is a planned successor to higher positions in the Division with accomplished efforts in higher level understanding and application of codes and standards through education, networking, and experience.

    • Examines all construction plans submitted for fire and life safety compliance in all commercial and multi-family residential structures; recommends sound alternatives to comply with fire and life safety codes in new and remodel construction projects. 
    • Indicates changes required for conformance to building codes, construction practices and structural soundness. 
    • Notifies responsible person of defects and issues verbal or written instructions for correction. 
    • Reviews qualifications of plans designer prior to issuance of plans approval.
    • Assists contractors, architects, engineers and the public with code compliance problems. 
    • Works with developers and architects on preliminary project planning.
    • Confers with the Fire Marshal in daily activities.
    • Advises other plans examiners, fire inspectors and building inspectors of code interpretations and procedures related to daily reviews.
    • Conducts fire and life safety inspections in commercial and multi-family residential occupancies in the City as needed.
    • Conducts inspections of fire protection, fire suppression and fire/smoke detection systems to verify such systems are installed in accordance with laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
    • Prepares reports and ensures follow up for life safety violations, complaints and hazardous conditions.
    • Investigates complaints of fire safety hazards and recommends resolution.
    • Assists with fire drills, pressure and flow tests and water supply applications in commercial buildings, places of assembly and special areas.
    • Ability to research, understand, and apply NFPA 1, Fire Code; NFPA 101, Life Safety Code;NFPA 72®, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code®NFPA 1030, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Prevention Program Positions; and NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems; City of North Port ULDC and all applicable City of North Port Fire Codes.

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures, pertaining to plans review of building construction and fire protection systems.
  • Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skilled in using computers for data entry.
  • Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to perform investigation work when required and write clear, concise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to use computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.) and enter data accurately from a wide variety of source documents.
  • Ability to plan, organize and use mature judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other employees and the public.

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma; Associates degree in related field preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience with fire systems and building plans review. 
  • Reasonable amount of experience in business and office administration, office procedures.


(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license Class E by date of hire. 
  • Must have a valid Florida State Fire Marshal's Office Fire Safety Inspector certification by date of hire and must possess or obtain NFPA Certified Fire Plan Examiner (CFPE) certification within 12 months or as agreed upon at time of hire; or must have a valid Florida State Building Code Administrator  certification by date of hire and must possess or obtain a valid Florida State Fire Marshal's Office Fire Safety Inspector certification and must possess or obtain NFPA Certified Fire Plan Examiner (CFPE) certification within 12 months or as agreed upon at time of hire. 

Salary : $59,501 - $95,202
