What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lineman position at City of North Platte?
Under general supervision of Line Crew Chief, performs semi-skilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of the electric distribution and transmission lines and system. Upon obtaining sufficient experience, will perform skilled work of journeyman level. May occasionally supervise other personnel.
Examples of Work Performed:
- Perform and participate in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of high voltage energized underground and overhead electrical distribution and transmission lines.
- Operate and use a wide variety of equipment including various hydraulic, hand and power tools, various trucks, wire pulling equipment chippers, voltage meters and hot line equipment
- Drive and operate heavy equipment including boom trucks, ditching and boring machines, and line trucks with various types of attachments, such as a hydraulic derrick and pole hole auger
- Service trucks and equipment
- Operate underground locating and fault-finding equipment.
- Stock trucks with necessary materials.
- Load, haul, set and climb poles
- String wire
- Hang or install transformers, lightning arresters, cutouts, cross arms and insulators.
- Install and connect meter reading equipment, switches, lightning arresters and related components.
- Read and understand switching maps and switches overhead and underground power lines as needed.
- Form and pour concrete; trim trees.
- Diagnose and make repairs in building electrical systems (in emergencies).
- Set transformers
- Build, maintain and repair substations and related equipment
- Install and repair residential and commercial service lines and facilities
- Handle and account for PCB’s
- Install street lighting circuits, standards and lights
- Replace burned out streetlights.
- Correct power failures
- Install and maintain load management injection equipment.
- Keep work and line records
- Prepare field work reports
- Respond to after-hours calls
- Train others and may supervise other Linemen in the absence of a Line Crew Chief.
- Perform other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.
Desirable Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Knowledge of approved methods, materials and tools used in high voltage electric distribution and transmission line construction and maintenance work, including substations and electrical gear.
- Knowledge of the principles of electric theory as applied to electric distribution and transmission systems and of the occupational hazards of power line work and of applicable safety precautions and devices.
- Knowledge of first aid, including CPR.
- Ability to work at heights, climb poles and work with high voltage wires, exercising proper safety precautions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to learn and perform skilled mechanical tasks.
- Ability to perform heavy manual and climbing tasks under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to serve in absence of Line Crew Chief.
- Ability to communicate in person, by telephone and two-way radio; ability to read and understand instructions, blueprints, procedures and plans;
- Ability to prepare reports and to distinguish wire colors and operate controls.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others.
- Skill in the use of line tools and testing equipment.
Experience and Training:
- An Associates Degree in Utility Line or progression through the Merchant Program is required. If sufficient previous experience in climbing and working with high voltage lines can be documented and demonstrated, the Associates Degree requirement may be waived but only while one finishes the Merchant Program.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License as required by the State.
