ELECTRICIAN

Performs skilled journeyman work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a variety of electrical systems, appliances, and equipment; does related work as required.

This is work involving responsibility for performing skilled electrical tasks in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade. Assignments are made either orally or through written work orders and may be accompanied by diagrams or blueprints. Work is often performed independently, subject to inspection by a supervisor upon completion for compliance with instructions and conformity with accepted safety standards. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate Maintenance Workers.

Installs, alters, maintains and repairs wiring systems, public address systems, switchboards, flood lights, ornamental lights, and other electrical fixtures and equipment;

Installs and makes electrical repairs to specialized equipment such as suction pumps, electric sterilizers, and various lamps;

Installs and maintains motors and generators;

Dresses and polishes commutators;

Seats and replaces brushes;

Rewinds and replaces coils and armatures, and does other electrical and some mechanical work in repairing and replacing parts;

Wires and runs conduit on new construction and rewires existing structures when indicated;

Performs temporary wiring for special events;

Performs electrical maintenance on relays, contractors, motor starters and heating units;

Uses standard and special electrical tools and equipment such as volt-meters, ammeters, power-factor meters, synchroscopes, and frequency meters;

Keeps time and work records and prepares work reports.

High school graduation plus considerable experience in electrical work,

An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 

As a minimum requirement, possession of a valid Dade County unrestricted Journeyman's License.

Possession of a valid Florida commercial driver's license "Class B" or higher.

Performs work in the water and sewer division as well as other areas within the City to oversee and complete all types of electrical repairs, maintenance and construction;

Assist with supervising crews in addition to Water and Sewer Personnel;

Installing and repairing various types of telephone and computer cables and equipment;

Repair of street lights;

Repair, install and replace all types of lighting fixtures.

Good knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the electrical trade;

Good knowledge of City, State and National Electrical Codes;

Good knowledge of hazards of the trade and of appropriate precautionary measures;

Skill in the use of the tools, materials and equipment of the electrical trade;

Ability to locate and adjust defects in electrical systems and equipment;

Ability to make simple estimates of time and materials;

Ability to work from electrical diagrams and blueprints and to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions;

Ability to direct and supervise a small group of Maintenance Workers when necessary;

Physical ability to perform duties.
