Description

Performs a variety of complex technical and administrative work in a typical office setting and in the field inspecting and enforcing compliance with, laws, regulations, and ordinances relative to the installation and operation of electrical systems and allied equipment in structures - public or private.

Examples of Duties

This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Inspects building materials or structures and premises, enforces city, county, state, and federal codes and regulations relating to building electrical and use. Prepares and submits periodic activity reports of inspections and investigations. Interprets and recommends changes in legal provisions governing electrical and use of buildings.
  • Plans, organizes, assigns and reviews the work of subordinate inspectors and/or plan reviewers in the inspection of electrical installation in buildings under construction for compliance with building code requirements and inspects sites before construction for practicability of plans.
  • Participates in the inspection of electrical installations in compliance with the provisions of the electrical ordinances and pertinent state provisions; consults with and advises subordinates concerning changes in the law governing the operation of the division, new developments in the field of electrical and proper methods of inspection.
  • Studies electrical ordinances of other cities and new developments in electrical appliances and installations with view to determining the adequacy of local ordinances; prepares drafts of ordinance revisions affecting electrical appliances and installation.
  • Receives, assists in and/or assigns the responsibility for investigation of complaints relating to electrical and issues citations to violators and coordinates the prosecution of violators to assure compliance with ordinances. Prescribes the techniques to be used in the investigations and the appropriate forms to record them.
  • Treats every resident, employee, attorney, public official, architect, engineer, fire marshal, builder, contractor, property owner as if he/she are a customer in his/her own privately-owned business.
  • Confirms that all completed structures have the necessary Electrical Inspection signed off. Confirms that all electrical documentation is included in the file prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy.
  • Reviews and approves features of plans for structural fire protection and public safety related to electrical, answers inquiries concerning electrical code requirements. Reviews and checks plans and specifications prior to issuance of building permits of proposed electrical installation. Discusses requirements of plans with engineers, contractors, builders or owner and the public at large.
  • Authorizes the condemnation of faulty and hazardous electrical installations; issues stop work orders; recommends the condemnation and demolition of buildings and structures to appropriate boards. Identifies and/or recommends cost control measures in the delivery of all services and functions in his/her department and under his/her area of responsibility.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required supplemented by five (5) years' experience as a Licensed Electrician, two (2) years as an electrical inspector/plans examiner of High-Rise/Multifamily buildings and two (2) years' experience performing plan review. Associate's degree preferred. Five (5) years' experience as a Senior Electrical Inspector and Plans Examiner preferred; or any acceptable related combination of education and experience.
