The Norfolk Community Services Board (NCSB) provides treatment, support, and education to the community with a focus on mental illness, substance use addiction, and intellectual/developmental disabilities. Norfolk CSB provides services to persons in acute crisis as well as integrated, person-centered, and recovery-oriented programming for persons needing assistance and support stabilizing in the community.

Today, the NCSB provides treatment and rehabilitation services to over 6,000 Norfolk citizens yearly. Norfolk CSB seeks team members interested in providing skilled services in a public service environment. The NCSB is seeking a Psychiatrist as a member of a collaborative interdisciplinary team, the physician actively engages in a full range of diagnostic, treatment, and therapeutic activities, utilizing a culturally competent, evidence-based approach to diagnosis and treatment. The physician will conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and provide ongoing outpatient assessment, psychopharmacological treatment, and psychotherapeutic interventions to adults with chronic and severe mental illness, including those with co-occurring disorders and developmental disabilities.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Performs complete psychiatric evaluations and provides ongoing outpatient psychiatric assessment and treatment for patients eligible for care at the NCSB.
  • Prescribes and monitors medications, including documentation of informed consent; maintains awareness of FDA indications and warnings; monitors efficacy, safety, and side effects of prescribed treatments.
  • Provides clinical management of urgent and semi-urgent clinical situations for patients, including on-call availability for consultation; provides after-hours phone consultation for urgent clinical matters involving patients; provides cross-coverage for other psychiatrists.
  • Provides direct psychiatric care services in accordance with the highest applicable standards of medical and professional practice and in full accordance with NCSB policies and procedures.
  • Documents the medical services rendered accurately, thoroughly, and in a timely manner in accordance with established policies and standards.
  • Maintains productivity standards per program requirements.
  • Participates in Utilization Review and Quality Assurance/Improvement activities.
  • Completes required training and certifications by their due date.
  • Performs related work, as required.
Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. Completion of an ACGME-accredited psychiatric residency program.

No additional experience above the successful completion of a psychiatric residency program.

Experience working with seriously mentally ill individuals in a community-based outpatient setting is preferred.
  • Unrestricted license to practice Medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry.
    • If Board-Eligible, the psychiatrist must obtain Board Certification within five years of completing their psychiatric residency program.
  • Valid DEA Registration to prescribe Schedule II-V controlled substances.
  • Eligible for credentialing with Medicaid, Medicare, and other third-party insurance payers.
  • Valid Driver's License may be required depending on assignment.
  • Certifiable in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Basic First Aid.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Working Hours: Monday — Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
