The Division includes specialized trades such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, roofing, and vertical transportation, along with skilled technicians responsible for pools, splashpads, and decorative fountains throughout the City. The Plumbing Section, based at Dana Street, supports aquatic facilities at recreation centers and outdoor public spaces to ensure compliance with State Health Department standards and the safety of citizens and staff.

- Monitor and maintain daily operation of commercial indoor and outdoor swimming pools, splashpads, and decorative fountains
- Perform water testing (chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid) and adjust chemical levels to maintain compliance with State Health Department regulations
- Calculate and dose chemicals appropriately based on pool volume and water test results
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair circulation pumps, motors, strainers, filters, heaters, chemical feed systems, and control panels
- Backwash and service sand, DE, and cartridge filtration systems as required
- Inspect and maintain chemical storage areas in accordance with safety standards and SDS requirements
- Perform seasonal start-up and winterization of outdoor aquatic facilities and fountains
- Diagnose and repair leaks in pool plumbing, valves, fittings, and underground lines
- Maintain splashpad recirculation systems and fountain mechanical components
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors for major repairs and equipment replacements
- Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, test logs, maintenance activities, labor hours, and materials in the work order management system
- Ensure pump rooms and mechanical areas remain clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards
- Respond to emergency service calls related to water quality, pump failure, or public safety concerns
- Educate recreation center personnel on basic operational procedures and reporting requirements
- Adhere to all OSHA, safety, and chemical handling requirements
Required
- One (1) year of experience.
- Two (2) or more years of experience maintaining commercial pools or aquatic facilities
- Experience working with splashpads and decorative fountain systems
- Experience calculating chemical dosing for large-volume commercial pools
- Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
- Experience interpreting Virginia Department of Health regulations for public pools
- Completion of vocational or technical training in plumbing, HVAC, or mechanical systems
- Associate degree in a technical or building trades field
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
- Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO)
- Pool & Spa Operator Certification
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Virginia Tradesman License (Plumbing or Mechanical)
- First Aid / CPR Certification
