Description
The Department of Libraries is seeking a Library Assistant II. This highly adaptable position works for the Community Engagement Office and in close partnership with the Programs Department. The position provides support for the Community Engagement Coordinators by developing and attending Outreaches, assisting with the Mobile Delivery and Express Book Nook Projects, and other tasks related to the Community Engagement Office. Assists with the daily operations of the library. Performs administrative duties including typing, filing, ordering supplies, and assisting with events. Provides customer service to patrons by providing information, promoting general usage of facilities, and operating all library equipment.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans and collecting fees.
- Develops, prepares for and delivers high-quality Outreaches, including but not limited to fairs, festivals, expos, conventions, and school and university visits.
- Provides documentation for high-quality Outreaches. Records and edits photographs and video for marketing and promotional purposes. Provides photography and videography support for programs and special events. As needed, posts photographs to social media during and after event.
- Provides support for Mobile Delivery, Express Book Nooks and other projects.
- Provides special event support including planning, marketing, ordering and purchasing supplies, transporting supplies, setting up, greeting dignitaries and guests, breaking down, serving food, cleaning, etc.
- Reviews and provides feedback for marketing materials (Associated Press Style copyediting, graphic design feedback based on City of Norfolk standards and graphic design principles).
- Develops and presents PowerPoints for meetings, programs, events, civic leagues, school visits, etc.
- Develops and presents systemwide trainings for Programs Department topics including Special Events Training, Civility, Graphic Design, early literacy programming and more.
- Provides program coverage and facilitation for youth and adult programming as needed. Leads and presents programs to a professional level. Provides statistical information and patron feedback to branch staff and Coordinators.
- Delivers program prizes as needed. Provides photographic documentation in the form of high-quality, visually appealing photography that displays patrons and prizes.
- Ensures that City Communications standards, Norfolk Public Library graphic design guidelines and standard grammar are met. Accepts feedback and makes changes to designs.
- Demonstrates excellent English language and writing skills.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
One year of experience in library or related customer service work.
Preferred Experience:
Experience delivering high-quality Outreach booths at a variety of events. Ability to promote Library resources and innovative City programs. Ability to develop excellent print and digital marketing materials, especially through the medium of Microsoft Office and Canva. Excellent English language, writing and copyediting skills. Ability to provide excellent customer service in all Outreach, program and special event settings. Experience driving larger vehicles such as cargo vans.
