The Department of General Services – Facility Maintenance Division provides critical operational support for the City of Norfolk by ensuring that all municipal facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained. The division oversees mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, custodial, and general maintenance needs across a diverse portfolio of city buildings and cultural assets. Facility Maintenance also manages preventive maintenance programs, capital improvement planning, incident response, and coordination with external contractors and vendors. At Dana Street, the Carpentry and Maintenance Division serves as the operational hub for departmental activity, supporting continuity of operations across multiple work sites while ensuring consistent standards of quality, safety, and customer service.

The Maintenance Mechanic II assigned to Dana Street reports directly to the Carpentry and Maintenance Division. This position performs skilled maintenance, repair, and carpentry duties across a wide range of city facilities. Work involves both preventive and corrective maintenance, supporting the operational readiness of municipal buildings, event venues, and administrative workspaces. The Maintenance Mechanic II serves as a key resource in ensuring building systems, carpentry tasks, and general repairs are completed efficiently, safely, and to departmental standards.

The Maintenance Mechanic II collaborates with other Facility Maintenance divisions and supports emergency response as required. The position requires sound judgment, strong trade knowledge, and the ability to adapt to evolving facility needs.

Essential Functions

  • Perform skilled carpentry and general maintenance work including installation, repair, and upkeep of doors, locks, hardware, windows, partitions, and cabinetry.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections to identify needed repairs and ensure compliance with safety codes and facility standards.
  • Respond to work orders assigned through Asset Essentials; mark tasks as complete promptly and provide accurate documentation of work performed.
  • Support supervisors in maintaining accurate records of labor hours, material usage, and cost tracking for assigned tasks.
  • Assist in special projects and capital improvement activities, ensuring work is completed in alignment with departmental priorities.
  • Serve as a point of contact for facility staff regarding minor repair needs, escalating issues requiring specialized trades as necessary.
  • Maintain proper use and care of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Participate in incident response and corrective action efforts, ensuring safety and operational continuity.
  • Support cross-training efforts and serve as a backup to other maintenance functions to ensure operational coverage.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational and technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Required:
  • At least (2) two years of hands-on experience performing general building or mechanical maintenance. Basic knowledge of pumps, motors, plumbing, and electrical troubleshooting. Proficiency using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), preferably Asset Essentials (formerly Facility Dude), or a similar system.
Strongly Preferred:
  • Prior experience working in secure facilities or government buildings.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License required.
Work Schedule:
  • Schedule will be Monday-Friday from 7:00AM-3:30PM. Occasional overtime work will be required due to facility emergencies and/or contractor work scheduling.
Signing Bonus:
  • This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus.

Salary : $46,794 - $53,698
