The City of Newton is currently accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic. This position participates in general firefighting activities and emergency pre-hospital care of the sick and injured, in response to alarms and emergency calls; drives and operates firefighting apparatus and ambulance vehicles; and performs other duties as required.
Salary and Benefits: The starting salary for a Firefighter-EMT ranges from $58,020 to $65,302, and for a Firefighter-Paramedic, it ranges from $61,317 to $69,013 (DOQ). In addition to competitive pay, we offer an excellent benefits package.
Requirements to Apply: Applicants must possess an Iowa EMT Certification or be Nationally Registered EMT (minimum). Students currently enrolled in an EMT class may also apply, but certification is required prior to employment. While Firefighter I and Paramedic certifications are preferred, the department will require Iowa Paramedic and Haz Mat Technician level certification within two years of appointment. Candidates must live within the State of Iowa, with residency within the City of Newton or within eight (8) miles preferred.

Additional Information: Candidates must be non-tobacco users and must obtain an Iowa Class D Chauffeurs license within one year of appointment. Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic Specialist certification and certification as Hazardous Materials First Responder at the Operations Level are also required within two years of appointment.
