(STORMWATER)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under close supervision, this position is responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of
storm sewer lines and cleaning drainage ditches and storm drains. Reports to a Crew Supervisor or
Operations Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs heavy manual work in excavated trenches below ground level in the maintenance, repair and
installation of storm sewer lines; cleans and re-grades back and side lot, roadside and major outfall
ditches using weed eaters, shovels and chainsaws; performs heavy manual work building and cleaning
storm drains, removing blockages and other obstructions to clear drainage systems; mixes mortar and
lays brick in the construction of manholes and storm sewer lines.
Operates heavy equipment to include tandem and single axle dump trucks, crew and utility trucks and
other equipment and hand tools; ensures the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by
following proper safety procedures, watching for underground utility lines, and checking for traffic;
sets out traffic cones and signs according to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD);
flags traffic as needed.
Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment
malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Stormwater Services – Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in maintaining
and repairing storm drainage construction.
Grounds Maintenance – Thorough knowledge of the techniques, tools, methods, practices,
procedures and materials related to grounds maintenance and vegetation control.

Equipment Operation – Thorough knowledge of the proper procedures for operating, inspecting
and maintaining assigned equipment. Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing the
operation of equipment.
Safety - Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to
equipment operation, hazardous materials, traffic patterns and conditions, and other work related
precautions.

REQUIRED ABILITIES

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment medical evaluation; pre-employment substance
abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Must obtain a CDL permit prior to
employment and complete the practical portion of the CDL test within 60 days of employment.
Must successfully complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident
Command System Certifications and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger and
Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Certifications within one year of employment.
The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during and following natural
disasters and emergency situations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work

Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding
work.
Some combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling,
crouching, and crawling.
May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and
materials (20-50 pounds).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues
or signals.
Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such s
dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous
materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, animals/wildlife, water hazards, disease,
or pathogenic substances.
