The City of Newburyport is seeking an Assistant Animal Control Officer (ACO) to provide on-call emergency animal control coverage and supplemental patrol services as needed.
This non-union position provides emergency coverage when the full-time ACO is unavailable due to holidays, vacation, or sick leave. Weekend on-call coverage runs from Friday at 12:00 PM through Monday at 8:00 AM. Additional proactive weekend patrols may be assigned during warmer months.
Responsibilities include responding to animal-related complaints and emergencies; enforcing local animal control ordinances and Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. c. 140); protecting the public, animals, and property; serving as Municipal Animal Inspector for rabies control; assisting with annual barn inspections; and maintaining required records and reports.
Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED; completion of a comprehensive animal control course acceptable to the Health Department; minimum two (2) years’ experience working with animals and animal owners or equivalent combination of education and experience; valid driver’s license.
Compensation: $250 monthly on-call stipend; $18.00/hour for patrols and hours worked responding to calls. Up to 19 hours per week.
Employment contingent upon successful reference checks, CORI, and pre-employment physical.
