About The Newberry Fire Department

The Newberry Fire Department is a full-time career agency proudly serving a rapidly expanding community. With an ISO rating of 3/3X, our department is committed to high-quality response, preparedness, and continuous improvement.

We Operate a Modern Fleet That Includes

  • Engine
  • 75’ Quint
  • 4,000-Gallon Tanker
  • Rapid Response Brush Truck

We provide ALS (non-transport) services with 15 full-time Fire/EMS personnel staffing 24/48 shifts, with a minimum of four personnel on duty at all times, supported by three part-time Firefighters.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Must meet NFPA 1582 medical standards
  • Prior Fire/EMS experience is preferred but not required

Required Certifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Florida State Certified EMT or Paramedic
  • Florida Firefighter II / Minimum Standards
  • BLS or Healthcare Provider CPR certification
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator Course) certification

Additional Requirements

  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background check
  • Must be tobacco-free for one year prior to appointment and remain tobacco-free throughout employment (affidavit required)

Essential Job Functions

(Representative duties include but are not limited to)

  • Deliver exceptional customer service and embodies the City’s core values T.R.A.I.L.S.
  • Perform fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical operations
  • Operate fire apparatus and equipment safely and efficiently
  • Provide emergency medical care at EMT or Paramedic level
  • Receive and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Conduct daily apparatus checks and maintain equipment readiness
  • Complete required reports and documentation
  • Participate in training, drills, and continuing education
  • Maintain station cleanliness and appearance
  • Perform all duties with professionalism, accountability, and a sense of urgency

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of fire suppression, EMS operations, and rescue techniques
  • Knowledge of emergency vehicle operations and defensive driving
  • Familiarity with Alachua County geography preferred
  • Ability to follow precise instructions under pressure
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain positive relationships

Physical Demands

This Position Requires

  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, crawling, kneeling, and lifting
  • Regular lifting of 25 lbs., frequent lifting of 50 lbs., and occasional lifting of 100 lbs.
  • Full range of vision, including color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment

Work Environment

  • Exposure to outdoor weather, heat, fumes, smoke, mechanical hazards
  • Occasional exposure to heights, chemicals, explosives, and electrical hazards
