GENERAL STATEMENT
The Entry Level Fleet Maintenance Technician is responsible for coordinating and performing routine maintenance on the City's fleet of vehicles, equipment, and small engines. This position is intended for an individual with basic mechanical aptitude who can perform preventative maintenance, identify mechanical issues, coordinate repairs with outside vendors, maintain accurate records, and ensure fleet vehicles remain safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable regulations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Public Works Director. Daily duty scheduling and monitoring may be performed under the direction of the appropriate plant Operator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine preventative maintenance including:
- Oil and filter changes
- Lubrication of equipment
- Tire inspections and pressure checks
- Battery testing and replacement
- Fluid level inspections
- Air filter replacement
- Wiper blade replacement
- Light bulb replacement
- Conduct scheduled vehicle safety inspections.
- Wash, clean, and detail City vehicles and equipment.
- Monitor vehicle condition and identify maintenance needs.
- Coordinate repairs with local repair shops and equipment vendors.
- Transport vehicles to and from repair facilities.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records using fleet management software or spreadsheets.
- Track service intervals, warranties, registrations, and maintenance schedules.
- Assist with annual fleet replacement planning by documenting vehicle condition and mileage.
- Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, fluids, filters, and common replacement parts.
- Keep maintenance shop organized, clean, and safe.
- Respond to minor roadside service needs such as jump starts, flat tire changes, or battery replacement.
- Assist other Public Works staff with non-mechanical duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience in vehicle maintenance, equipment maintenance, public works, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain any required certifications after hire.
Valid State driver’s license with a clean driving record
Must successfully pass a criminal history background check and drug screen.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Required
- Basic understanding of vehicle maintenance.
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools.
- Ability to follow written maintenance schedules.
- Ability to identify obvious mechanical problems requiring professional repair.
- Good organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Ability to communicate effectively with vendors and City staff.
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office or similar software.
Preferred
- Experience maintaining municipal or commercial fleets.
- Experience operating light equipment.
- Familiarity with preventative maintenance programs.
- Basic knowledge of hydraulic systems and diesel equipment.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanics tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, pneumatic tools, and
other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment and welding equipment. Standard office equipment including computer and a calculator.
