Description

Responsible work involving the enforcement of city, county, and state animal protection, control laws and ordinances.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will patrol neighborhoods at random and in response to complaints of animals at large for violations of animal control ordinances. Work is performed under supervision of the Chief Animal Control Officer who will provide instruction regarding care, humane treatment and handling of animals. Ensuring reports of animal bites and searches for stray animals involved in bite incidents are properly handled. Enforcement of state and county health department laws regarding rabies vaccination requirements, rabies control, and quarantine procedures in cooperation with the health department and other agencies. Respond directly or indirectly to calls on injured animals, determining the extent of injuries, and administering first aid as necessary. Perform emergency euthanasia for sick or injured animals in the field, euthanasia of sick or injured animals brought to the shelter. Gathering evidence for prosecution of persons violating the ordinances. Obtaining corroborating evidence from veterinary statements as needed, securing necessary search and seizure warrants and court orders, and making court appearances and giving testimony as necessary.

Education, Experience, Licensing

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of animal handling experience. Requires valid Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Must possess Florida State Certification in euthanasia or willing to obtain within 90 days of employment. Ability to lift up to 80 pounds, bend, stoop, lift, and crawl as necessary for the handling and transport of animals.

Supplemental Information

Considerable knowledge of local laws pertaining to animals. Knowledge of the geography of the County. Ability to remain calm in unusual and difficult situations. Ability to prepare and maintain routing work records and reports. Ability to communicate information in a courteous and informative manner. Knowledge of animal cruelty ordinances. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials.

Work hours and days will vary; M-F 8-4:30 with rotating weekends and holidays. Rotating on-call schedule is required.
