The Civilian Complaint Review Board (“CCRB”) is charged with investigating, mediating, and prosecuting complaints which members of the public file against New York City police officers alleging the use of force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, offensive language, untruthful statements made by officers, and racial profiling and biased policing. The Board consists of 15 members who are appointed by the Mayor, the City Council and Public Advocate or designated by the police commissioner. The Board is responsible for governing the agency. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the agency. As the largest police oversight agency in the United States, the CCRB currently investigates approximately 4,500 complaints each year.

The Senior Communications Advisor will report directly to the Senior Advisor and will be responsible for developing and overseeing the execution of the Agency's long-term communications strategy. The Senior Communications Advisor will be responsible also work with the Outreach and Policy units on public education and communication around various CCRB initiatives and work products, leading the creation and dispersal of public-facing materials when appropriate.

The Senior Communications Advisor Will

  • Develop and execute the Agency's long-term communications strategy
  • Expand the Agency’s reach by increasing public and media awareness of its services, oversight powers, and mission and mandate to conduct independent and impartial investigations while facilitating meaningful dialogue on police-community relations.
  • Respond to inquiries from members of the media regarding CCRB complaints, data, and overall operations
  • Build relationships with members of the media to promote citywide understanding of the structure and mission of the CCRB
  • Prepare remarks for principals for monthly board meetings, panel discussion, and events
  • Create, maintain and update all social media accounts and website content including an outreach calendar, trial calendar, public meeting notices and statistical reports
  • Monitor media for mentions of CCRB and allegations of police misconduct
  • Serve as liaison to external communication teams
  • Publicize agency reports, policy initiatives, and public board meetings through news releases and press advisories

DEPUTY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (NON - 1019A

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and five years of recent full-time responsible professional, supervisory or administrative experience; or
  • A license to practice law in the State of New York and three years of recent fulltime responsible professional, supervisory or administrative experience; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must possess at least three years of professional, supervisory or administrative experience as described above.

Preferred Skills

  • Candidate must be capable of leading a team and working well independently and collaboratively. - Excellent research, writing, editing, and communications skills. - Proven experience drafting and editing press releases, advisories, press briefings, op-eds, letter to the Editors, talking points, speeches, and/or other related press materials. - Strong analytical and organization skills, and attention to detail. Must be able to handle multiple deadline assignments in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment. - Ability to fact-check and synthesize complex legislation, law, and research on a range of police- community relations topics. - Knowledge of and experience working in New York City media market and with the press a must, prior relationships with New York City reporters a plus - Passion and commitment to the mission of the Agency and cultivating a positive, collegial work environment. - Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Power Point and other Microsoft Office applications. - Familiarity with various social media and digital platforms. - Discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters. - Proficiency in a language other than English a plus - Experience managing a principal or executive, including media training, workflows, and scheduling a plus - Experience with a form of CMS a plus

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
