The New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country; its mission is to combat municipal corruption. DOI serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for New York City government, City agencies, and City employees, vendors with City contracts, individuals and entities that receive City funds.

The NYC Department of Investigation is seeking a motivated College Aide to serve as a Desk Support Engineer. This role will provide hands-on desktop support across the organization. The candidate will assist in troubleshooting, maintaining, and deploying hardware and software systems in compliance with agency standards and specifications.

The Desk Support Engineer – College Aide will be responsible for the following tasks:

Perform All Aspects Of Desktop PC Support Including

Troubleshooting and resolving user problems

Hardware deployment

Ongoing software installation and updates

Conduct asset inventory and management to ensure proper tracking and control of all IT assets.

Ensure desktops are set up and maintained in accordance with agency specifications and standards.

Provide basic support for Voice over IP (VoIP) phones.

Monitor And Manage Ticket Queues

Ensure prompt handling of tickets based on priority, aging, and type.

Maintain Desktop Support Documentation

Technical reference guides

System builds

Troubleshooting guides

Procedures and related materials

Assist in developing and applying troubleshooting strategies for end-user issues.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

If selected, the candidate may be fingerprinted and will undergo a background investigation.

COLLEGE AIDE (ALL CITY DEPTS) - 10209

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.

For Assignment Level II (Information Technology)

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow)

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE

Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.

Preferred Skills

Must be currently enrolled in a college or university and in good academic standing. Basic knowledge of desktop hardware, operating systems (Windows), and common productivity software (Microsoft Office Suite). Familiarity with IT ticketing systems (e.g. Manage Engine) is a plus. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Previous experience in IT support (internship or school-based work) is preferred but not required. Practical experience in hardware troubleshooting. - Ability to diagnose and resolve network printer issues. - Familiarity with GoverLan/Endpoint Central - Skilled in managing, testing, and deploying standard desktop and laptop images. Ability to interpret and understand technical manuals, procedural documentation - Clear understanding of organizational goals and objectives. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail. - Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and manage tasks effectively in a high-pressure environment. - Customer-focused with a strong service orientation. - Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues. - Proficiency in working with command-line functions and occasional registry editing.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
