What are the responsibilities and job description for the Refuse Laborer, Seasonal position at City of New Haven?
Introduction
This is heavy manual work in collecting garbage and refuse.
Work involves performing heavy manual work in the collection of garbage, refuse, trash, and recycling on residential routes. Work is performed as a member of a crew under close supervision.
A CDL is NOT required for this Seasonal position; this is an excellent opportunity for a candidate to learn the ropes with the DPW team! Many of our Seasonal employees go on to full time employment with the City.
Up to 40 hours per week; Work hours are typically 5:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 days.
Primary Functions
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a General Fund, "Non Tested" position.
This seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of seasonal employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time. Seasonal employment not to exceed 120 calendar days.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment physical examination, including pre-employment drug screening accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy*. Instructions and information on this pre-employment process are included in Conditional Offer of Employment.

- Picks up and carries medium to large-sized containers in front of houses on an established route; picks up trash in other areas as directed.
- Dumps container into truck, ensuring that all refuse is deposited in the truck; cleans area around truck and container; returns empty container to its proper place.
- Performs related work as required.
- Some knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions of the work.
- Some knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of garbage trucks.
- Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees, and to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and tactful manner.
- Physical strength sufficient, to lift and carry heavy objects over a long distance under adverse weather conditions.
- Requires the ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions for extended periods of time, in and around vehicular traffic.
- Works among heavy machinery, dangerous / sharp objects.
- May be exposed to slippery wet or icy conditions.
- Exposure to noisy environments.
- Additional hazards not listed here may be encountered.
