The City of New Carrollton is looking for an energetic and dependable Grounds Maintenance Worker to help keep our parks, public spaces, and City grounds looking their best. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Operates and maintains landscaping and groundskeeping equipment, mows and trims grass, maintains trees, shrubs, and flower beds, removes litter and debris, and assists with seasonal maintenance and special projects. The position may also perform general labor and other duties as assigned to support the City's Public Works operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain playgrounds, parks, fields, and other City grounds.
- Operate equipment such as walk behinds, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, blowers, trimmers, chippers, post hole diggers, and other equipment on flat or uneven terrain.
- Participate in the mowing, seeding, sowing, fertilizing, spreading and grading turf.
- Cut bushes and weeds alongside highways and right of ways; remove debris and litter alongside the creek.
- Assist in the planting and pruning of flowers, trees, shrubs, bushes, and hedges.
- Participate in loading, unloading, and set-up of playground equipment, supplies, and/or materials.
- Perform minor construction and repairs on park equipment.
- Participate in seasonal leaf collection and snow removal.
- Substitute and rotate as Sanitation Collector when needed.
- Perform safe and efficient work safety standards; wear PPE: safety vests, gloves, glasses, etc.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or GED.
Three (3) months of experience in grounds keeping, landscaping, or maintenance.
Knowledge of basic computer skills/data entry; must be able to read, write and send emails; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing, raising objects that exert between 20-50 pounds in force on a regular and recurring basis, and 50-100 pounds on an occasional basis.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (Work Environment)
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Work assignments are performed primarily outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to unusual elements, such as moving equipment, exposure to traffic, extreme hot or cold temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, debris, smoke, fumes, and loud noises.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIREMENTS
Valid Driver's License.
