Description
Performs difficult work supervising and coordinating the public safety activities and developing of assigned personnel in preserving the peace and promoting the safety of citizens throughout the City of New Brighton. Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances. Performs related work as apparent or assigned.
Essential Functions
Exercises a leadership style that promotes collaboration, appropriate staff initiative and creates individual growth opportunities for understanding and performing the technical and operational aspects of effective public safety practices.
- Supervises, directs and evaluates the day-to-day performance of assigned personnel in a mentoring and coaching manner that contributes to achieving and maintaining the expected levels of protection, enforcement, and service for the community.
- Performs law enforcement duties as required, including but not limited to response to calls for service, enforcement activities, investigations, arrests, reporting, court testimony, and community relations.
- Oversees and coordinates assigned operational and investigative activities, including case management, prioritization, and workload distribution.
- Meets individually and collectively with assigned personnel to provide performance feedback and identify areas for improvement of results being achieved.
- Reviews reports and case files for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with department policies and procedures, and assigns or reassigns work as appropriate.
- Provides leadership and direction for the effective implementation of various community policing programs and actively seeks feedback and suggestions for program refinements from assigned personnel and citizens.
- Conducts and/or oversees administrative and criminal investigations as assigned.
- Coordinates and manages background investigations and related process for personnel and regulatory or licensing purposes, as assigned.
- Ensures compliance with department training requirements by attending and completing required trainings
- Oversees and maintains accountability for departmental resources and operational functions, such as evidence/property management or other assigned areas
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Criminal investigations or closely related field with considerable work-related experience.
- Four or more years of service as a licensed peace officer with any law enforcement agency at time of appointment
- Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST Board) licensure
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification
Desired Qualifications
- Previous assignments within the department, e.g. field training officer, school resource officer, detective/investigator, or community engagement officer
- Licensure, certification, or experience in firefighting, emergency management, or other public safety discipline
- Professional supervisory experience
