: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating medium and heavy construction equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to operate equipment with precision and accuracy around water, sewer, electric and other lines; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in operation and maintenance of medium and heavy motorized equipment.
**Special Requirements**
Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Depending upon Department assignment possession of Grade-C Water Distribution and Grade-I Wastewater Collection certifications issued by the State of North Carolina.

- Operates front-end loader loading and unloading trucks.
- Operates backhoe in excavating utility trenches; sets heavy fittings and pipe; uncovers utility lines.
- Assists drainage maintenance crews; lays pipe in ditches and driveways.
- Inspects equipment for safety prior to operating.
- Performs construction maintenance and repair tasks when not operating equipment.
- Lubricates and checks off, fluid levels, hoses, hydraulic systems and makes minor adjustments as necessary.
- Loads and unloads heavy equipment on to tractor-trailer.
- Assists with snow removal and ice control.
- May be required to work outside normal working hours in an emergency or stand-by status.
- Performs related tasks as required.
